When your students are active on Slack, that's a great sign that they're engaged in your online learning program.

With the Virtually Student Relationship Manager's (SRM) new Slack Engagement Tracking feature, you can now get a clear pulse on which students are active on Slack, and which students might be checking out.

With the Virtually SRM, you can combine signals from Slack engagement with other student engagement data points - attendance, assignment submissions, etc. - to get a clear pulse on which students are on track and which might benefit from a nudge.

What Data Can Be Pulled?

With Slack engagement tracking, you can pull in the number of posts, comments, and reactions, that community members make.

You can use this data by pulling reports (more on that below) to see exactly how much your students engage in Slack.

How to Set Up Slack Engagement Tracking:

Part 1: Integrate with Slack

1. To integrate your Virtually SRM Account with Slack, head to Settings --> Integrations.

2. Click 'Connect' and follow the instructions to get Slack integrated.

3. While you'll be able to pull data from any Slack channel, it's important to choose a channel when completing the integration. Don't worry - you won't be limited to pulling from this channel only. Any channel from your Slack workspace just needs to be specified in order to complete the integration:

4. Click 'Allow.'

When you integrate with Slack, Virtually will immediately start pulling in Slack engagement data and will backfill data from the past 30 days. This allows you and your team to get value from this data right from the get-go, instead of having to wait for data to build up after you've integrated.

Part 2: Access Slack Engagement Data

Once your Slack integration is complete, you can access that data by creating reports.

1. Head to the Insights Tab

2. Click 'Create Report'

3. Follow the steps to build out your report. For example, you can choose to pull a report with the following details:

Showcase all students in your Cohort 1 tag that have posted to Slack less than 3 times in the last 7 days.

4. From there, the report will appear Reports. It will auto-update every hour.

How to Pull Data from Private Channels

Slack engagement data will get auto-pulled from all of your public channels upon integration. In order to pull data from private channels, the Virtually app must be added to those channels. This app must be added by a channel member. Here's how to do that:

1. Head to the private channel you'd like to add, and click the button on the top right that showcases the number of members in that channel:

2. Toggle over to the 'Integrations' tab and click 'Add apps':

3. Search and select the Virtually app:

Repeat this process for all channels from which you'd like to pull Slack engagement data. Again, this action must be done by a channel member.

Feature Limitations:

We currently are unable to pull engagement data form Direct Messages (DMs). This is functionality we will have in the future.
