Chat

Visalaw 2.0 now offers one unified chat experience, replacing separate modes and tools with a single, streamlined interface. With the new version, you can now seamlessly use PrivateGPT and Legal Research within the same chat window.

Chat Features Overview

  • Research—When the Research toggle is enabled, the system automatically searches the immigration law library, checks relevant government websites, and includes case law when applicable.

  • Citations are only available when Research mode is on. You can turn them off if you prefer a clean, plain-text answer without footnotes.

  • The Link to Project—Associate a chat with an existing case, keeping all related questions and work organized in one place for easy reference

  • The All Sources—When Research is turned off, all immigration law library sources are automatically deselected. If needed, you can manually select specific sources again.

  • Web Search—When Research is off and Web Search is on, the system uses internet sources. When Research is on, Web Search isn’t needed, as government sources are already included.

  • Skills are essentially a rebrand of prompts. Skills use a built-in priority system to determine which sources—such as the law library, GovSync, or case law are used first when generating answers.

  • Attachments provide a modern file upload experience, allowing you to add files from anywhere in the platform. By including documents as context for your queries, you can get more accurate and relevant responses, and use them with Skills for more tailored results.

Skills

Skills are essentially structured prompts—pre-built, reusable instructions. There are 500+ immigration-specific Skills designed for the workflows attorneys handle every day, helping standardize outputs, improve consistency, and save time while still allowing users to add their own context or attachments as needed.

Use AI Skill Assistant (Recommended)

  1. Click on Skills > Create a New Skill

  2. Select Use AI Skill Assistant

    Projects

Projects serve as dynamic folders where you can store chats, drafts, translations, summaries, and uploaded documents—all in one place. They offer flexible sharing, allowing you to grant access to specific individuals or teams.

    Documents

Upload and securely store files you want to reference, reuse, or keep for future use. Organize important materials in one place and easily access them whenever needed to support your work across chats and tasks.

    Drafts

For more detailed guidance on creating letter drafts, please refer to the Drafts Process Guide.

    Law Library

A resource for immigration-specific legal information, powered by a chat-based GPT agent and the largest centralized immigration dataset. It includes, but is not limited to, U.S. immigration law, case law, regulations, and other authoritative resources to support your research.

For additional information on legal sources, please visit Visalaw AI Coverage page.

How to search the Law Library

The Law Library allows you to search legal content using keyword search (enabled by default), which finds results based on exact words or phrases, or semantic search, which returns results based on meaning and context even if the exact terms aren’t used. You can also ask questions directly within the library about specific documents, making it easy to find and understand relevant information without leaving the library view.
