Legal Research → Research Agent
Research Agent is ON by default, so Chat automatically determines what your question requires, finds and queries the most relevant sources, reviews the information, and provides an answer—all without requiring you to switch between Research, Document Q&A, or Web Search or manually select sources.
The Research Agent will access additional collections, such as Unpublished BIA Decisions, the Physicians Library, and other available sources. (found under “Filter Sources”).
Citations are already enabled by default. Click any citation number to open the source alongside the answer.
You can upload documents directly to the chat. Supported file types: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, PNG, JPG, PAGES and others. Maximum file size: 250 MB per document.
Work Smarter While You Wait
Answer Now appears after about 20 seconds.
Select it to stop further research and generate an answer based on the information gathered so far.
Continue Research resumes the research process.
Skill suggestions: If an existing Skill matches your request.
Chat may suggest it after you send your message.
Follow-up questions: At the end of each answer, Chat suggests 3–4 related questions you can ask next.
Want to Manually Choose a Search Mode?
You don’t need to choose between Document Q&A, Private GPT, or legal research anymore. The Research Agent automatically determines which capability is needed and turns it on for you.
The + menu sits in the bottom-left of the chat box and holds three switches:
Research Agent
Citations
Web Search
Note: Your Research Agent settings carry over to new chats, so remember to turn Research Agent back on after completing a quick task.
Doc Q&A → Research Agent off + attachment
Ask about any document right in Chat. With Research Agent off, the answer comes from your file and cites it directly.
Start a new Chat and open the + menu. Uncheck Research Agent to switch to Document Q&A
Copy/paste text or click the paperclip, pick the file, and upload.
Ask your question. Review the answer and click a citation, such as [1], to view the relevant passage in your uploaded file.

The same quick help is Chat with Research Agent off: plain drafting, no library search, back in a few seconds.
Start a New Chat, open the + menu, and uncheck Research Agent.
Optional: check Web Search if you want current information from the open web.
