Sometimes, you have to sign a physical document, such as a vehicle title, but you can't - maybe you're in one country and the title document is in another country.
In cases like this, you might want to authorize someone else to sign the document for you.
The document required to authorize someone else to sign on your behalf is called a Power of Attorney (POA).
What is a power of attorney?
A power of attorney is a document that allows one person (the principal) to authorize another person (the agent) to act on the principal's behalf on specified matters.
For authorizations related to vehicles, Montana has Form MV65 - Power of Attorney:
What information is required for Form MV65 - Power of Attorney?
Agent and principal information
The name and address of the principal (the person authorizing the agent to sign), as well as the name and address of the agent (the person authorized to sign) are required, as well as any additional authorities granted:
For all visitor.us POA's, we write "no other authority" to make clear that we don't have your authorization to do anything besides sign documents related to the specified vehicle.
Vehicle details
The vehicle's year, make, model, VIN, and color are required.
If the vehicle is 2011 and newer (and is not a trailer), the vehicle's odometer reading and date read must be recorded.
If the vehicle is 2010 and older, these fields can be left blank.
Owner/Applicant signature and notary block
The notary must witness the principal (not the agent) sign and date the Owner/Applicant Signature line, and sign and stamp in the notary block:

Odometer certification block
If the vehicle is 2011 and newer (and is not a trailer), AND the principal is the buyer/transferee, the principal must sign, date, and print the principal's name in the odometer certification block:
If:
the vehicle is 2010 or older
the vehicle is a trailer, or
the principal is NOT the buyer/transferee
Then the odometer certification block can be left blank.
Original document
If the POA is signed and notarized in person, the physical, ink-signed document is required.
Copies, images and scans of a physically notarized POA are NOT valid.
If the POA is signed and notarized via a remote online notarization process, a printed soft copy of the notarized POA IS valid.

In order to register your vehicle, the buyer’s section of your vehicle’s prior title must be signed. If you are unable to physically sign it, you can authorize visitor.us to sign it on your behalf with a notarized power of attorney.
Once we have your notarized power of attorney - whether physically notarized or remote online notarized - visitor.us can sign the buyer’s section of your vehicle’s title and submit it for registration.
