Can I receive free or low-cost breast and cervical screening in Washington?
Yes! In Washington, your best resource is the Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program (BCCHP), administered by the Washington State Department of Health (DOH). This program provides free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to eligible residents. BCCHP
What services are offered?
Under BCCHP, eligible residents may receive a range of services including:
Screening services – breast & cervical:
Clinical breast exam and screening mammogram for eligible individuals.
Pelvic exam and Pap smear.
HPV testing (when applicable).
Diagnostic / follow-up services (if screening results are abnormal):
Diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasound, biopsy (as required) for breast abnormalities.
Colposcopy, LEEP, cervical biopsy, cryotherapy for cervical abnormalities. (These services may be available via local provider networks through BCCHP.)
Navigation / case management to assist with screening follow-up and connection to treatment resources.
Who is eligible?
To qualify for BCCHP in Washington state you generally must meet the following criteria:
Residence: Live in Washington state.
Age: Generally between 21 and 64 years old (for breast & cervical screening) – note some age brackets apply differently by service.
Insurance status: Uninsured or underinsured (meaning you lack adequate insurance coverage for screening and/or have high out-of-pocket costs).
Income: Your household income must typically fall at or below specific thresholds
How do I apply or schedule services?
Find a BCCHP provider near you.
Call the BCCHP toll-free line: 1-888-438-2247 to get referrals.
Visit the Washington DOH website for BCCHP and get contact info for your region.
At the provider appointment:
When you go for your screening, you’ll complete an application for the BCCHP program (and verify your eligibility).
The provider can help you with scheduling the mammogram / Pap test and coordinate follow-up if needed.
If screening results are abnormal and further diagnostic or treatment services are required:
Ask the provider how BCCHP helps with follow-up diagnostics, case navigation and connection to treatment resources.
If you’re uninsured or underinsured, ask about programs for treatment support or Medicaid eligibility (e.g., the state’s Apple Health program).
