CGM sensors are water-resistant, but not fully waterproof.
They can handle everyday water exposure, but prolonged submersion or vigorous water activity may cause the sensor to loosen, fall off, or give unreliable readings.
Can I wear my CGM sensor in water?
✅ Generally safe for (all CGMs):
Showering 🚿
Bathing 🛁
Swimming and water exposure — important differences
If you’re using Sibionics GS3
Rated IP38
Can be submerged in up to 1 metre of water for up to 1 hour
Suitable for short swims and light water exposure
Even with GS3, prolonged swimming or frequent water exposure may weaken the adhesive over time.
If you’re using FreeStyle Libre 2 / 2 Plus
Water-resistant, but more sensitive to prolonged water exposure
Extended swimming or repeated submersion may cause the sensor to loosen or fall off
Adhesive may degrade faster in saltwater or chlorinated pools
⚠️ Use caution with:
Swimming for long periods
Water sports or high-movement activities
Saltwater or heavily chlorinated pools
❌ Not recommended (any CGM):
Extended swimming sessions
High-impact water sports
Repeated long submersions over multiple days
Vively recommendation:
We generally advise avoiding swimming with a CGM where possible, as water exposure significantly increases the risk of sensor detachment.
How to protect your sensor around water
To reduce the risk of issues:
Use a waterproof adhesive patch or tape over the sensor
Pat the area dry gently after water exposure (avoid rubbing)
Minimise arm movement while wet
Final thoughts
CGM sensors are designed to handle everyday water exposure, but they aren’t built for extended swimming.
If your sensor falls off or stops working due to water exposure, replacement may not be covered.
If swimming is unavoidable, take extra precautions or consider timing sensor changes around water activities.
