Protein is a macronutrient because it provides fuel for the body. Protein is a long string of amino acids that when digested are available for a range of processes in the body including muscle and cell repair, immune responses, hormone production and metabolism.

Sources of protein include:

  • Lean meats, chicken, fish and eggs

  • Tofu and tempeh

  • Dairy foods such as milk, yoghurt and cheese

  • Legumes such as chickpeas, lentils and kidney beans

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Protein powders
