It is important to appoint an agent who you trust to have your best interests in mind, to manage and understand your private financial information, and to make definitive decisions if needed. Ideally, your agent would have a strong sense of responsibility, be a good communicator, and be responsive. You should also choose someone who can work with your agent under your advance healthcare directive to make sure any of your medical and personal care expenses are paid on time. While you can name the same individual for both roles, you do not need to do so.
What to look for:
At least 18 years old
Strong sense of responsibility (for example, this person is financially responsible, understands your financial and estate plans, and is likely to act in your best interest)
Diligence and responsiveness
Is easy to reach in case of emergency
Concerns to consider:
Unresponsiveness in daily communications with you currently
Is intimidated by financial issues or important financial decisions
Lives abroad or in a significantly different time zone from you
