How to configure assets owned by entities on the balance sheet

Explains the two ways to configure and view assets owned by LLCs, partnerships, and other entities on the balance sheet.

Option 1: As a Row Group (recommended for entities)

Use when: You want to see all entity-owned assets in one section.

Best for: Clients with multiple entities, estate planning, and reporting per entity.

How this displays:

  • A separate Entities section appears in the balance sheet.

  • Each entity (e.g., “Smith Family LLC”) is its own group.

  • Expand an entity to see categories and assets under it.

  • You can:

    • Show/hide entities

    • Reorder entities with drag-and-drop

    • Choose whether each entity’s values are included in the totals

Option 2: Within Assets

Use when: You want to see entity assets under their normal categories.

Best for: Quick review or when entities are less important than asset types.

How this displays:

  • Assets owned by entities stay under Cash, Investments, etc.

  • Each asset shows a grey sub-label with the entity name.

  • No separate Entities section.

How to change the display

  1. In the Balance Sheet, click the Data option icon in the toolbar.

  2. From the Rows tab, find Choose how to display LLCs and other organizations that own assets.

  3. Select:

    • As a Row Group — separate Entities section

    • Within Assets — keep entities inline with categories

  4. Click Apply.

Include in balance sheet totals

When using As a Row Group, each entity has a setting: Include values in balance sheet totals.

  • Checked (default): Values count toward Inside/Outside totals.

  • Unchecked: Values are visible but excluded from totals (e.g., for certain planning scenarios).
