Getting Started with Ester

Getting started guide to understand the workflow when using Ester AI. Covers uploading documents, and what each tool in the extraction analysis does.

Ester reads estate planning documents to extract and organize key details into structured summaries, insights, and data cards — so you spend less time scanning pages and more time advising clients. Ester is available exclusively in the advisor portal and cannot be accessed by clients.

You can also watch this tutorial video that covers the below.

Supported Document Types

Ester can extract information from .pdf and .docx files. Please ensure that the files are not password-protected before uploading.

  • Revocable Trusts (Joint and Individual)

  • Irrevocable Trusts: including GRATs, ILITs, SLATs, QPRTs, CRATs, CRUTs, and Dynasty Trusts.

  • Wills: Last Wills & Testaments and Pour-Over Wills.

  • Advance Health Care Directives

  • Financial Powers of Attorney

  • LLC Operating Agreements

Best Practices: Amendments, Codicils and Restatements

  • Amendments and codicils — To ensure the latest decisions from amendments or codicils are captured by Ester, please combine the original document and the amendment(s) into a single PDF before uploading. Ester will recognize the latest decisions from the amendment or codicil in the document summarization.

  • Trust restatements — Upload only the restatement document. Do not include the original trust. Ester can process a standalone restatements.

  • Pour-Over Wills — These can be uploaded and extracted on their own without the associated trust document.

  • Multi-Document PDFs: Upload one PDF containing several documents — e.g., a revocable trust, pour-over will, and health care directive. Ester recognizes each, splits them apart, and analyzes them separately.

Core Workflow: Kicking off Ester Analysis of Documents

Upload a Document & Run Ester Automatically

  1. Select a client, then navigate to the Vault page.

  2. You can upload documents individually, or select multiple at once and upload in bulk.

    • Ester can read PDFs and DocX file types.

  3. Once documents are selected, if you leave the "Analyze with Ester" toggle turned on, Ester will automatically categorize the document type (e.g. Revocable Trust, Last Will & Testament, Power of Attorney) and begin analyzing the document automatically after upload.

  4. Once Ester finishes processing a document, click the the row to review the analysis.

Start Ester (if you didn't run automatically on upload)

If you have previously uploaded documents to the Vault, or toggled "Analyze with Ester" off during upload, you can choose the icon under the AI column to begin the Ester analysis.

  • If Ester says the document type is not supported, you can still keep the file in Vault, but Ester is not available to run an analysis for that type.

Deliverables Provided by Ester

Ester will provide the following deliverables after the analysis is complete:

  • Executive Summary — A high-level breakdown of the document's key details, including trustees, disposition details, and other important provisions. You can hover over and click linked citations to see exactly where Ester found each piece of information in the original document. This is available from Reports to include

  • Advanced Summary Mode — Toggle this on for a deeper analysis covering over fifty attributes. This is ideal when you need to understand the legal, administrative, and financial nuances of a trust. Advanced mode expands into sections like Trust Administration and Key Individuals, Dispositive Details, Key Provisions (including tax-related and beneficiary clauses), Trustee Powers & Provisions, and Miscellaneous Administrative Details.

  • Insights & Observations — Advisory-level guidance that goes beyond what the document says to highlight what it means. Ester flags inconsistencies, errors, outdated provisions, and opportunities.

  • Q&A — Ask Ester any question about the document (for example, "Who are the beneficiaries of this trust?"). Ester draws answers from multiple AI engines. You can rate responses to help Ester learn your preferences over time.

  • Trust or Will Data Card — Ester populates a structured data card with information including Key Roles, Beneficiaries, and Funding details. Look for the purple "AI" citations that show where each data point was found in the document. Be sure to select Save Contact after reviewing and editing.

    • If you do not Save Contact, the Data Card will save as a DRAFT.

Viewing Citations

To see exactly where Ester pulled information from the original document:

  • Hover over a linked citation to see the section.

  • Click on a linked citation to be taken straight to that section in the document.

  1. From the Vault, use the checkboxes to select the documents you wish to combine into a summary

  2. At the top of the Vault table, select Summarize.
