How to Account for Future Children in the Trust or Will Workflow

How to future-proof estate planning documents to account for future children.

People often assume they should wait until after the child is born to create an estate plan, but oftentimes, it is better to get the estate plan in place before the child arrives. It is important that your children be provided for in case something happens to you – there is no need to wait to create your trust or will.

How to account for future children:

Our workflow allows you to "future-proof" documents so that distributions of assets will automatically include any "after-born" children. This means in the document, any child born or adopted after the document is executed is automatically included in the definition of "children".

This can be achieved by selecting the option to "account for future children" within the Children panel in the workflow:

Additionally, you are able to come back and update your trust as many times as you like. Should you decide down the road that you wish to list your child to receive a specific percentage of your estate, gift any specific assets to them, or name them to a role, you can do so!
