Send form entries to Kit (ConvertKit)

Visitors who opt in on your WeInc site's forms are added to a Kit form.

Written by Umair Ali

Connect Kit (formerly ConvertKit) to your WeInc site and visitors who agree to marketing emails are added to a Kit form as subscribers.

What it does

  • WeInc only sends an entry to Kit if it has an email address and the visitor ticked a marketing opt-in box on your form. Everyone else is skipped, and the entry stays in Form submissions.

  • The visitor is added as a Kit subscriber with their email and first name (when the form has one), then added to the Kit form you choose. The page they signed up on is passed to Kit as the referrer.

  • Other form fields are not sent to Kit.

Two ways to connect

  • Connect with Kit (ConvertKit) (easiest): sign in to Kit (ConvertKit) and approve WeInc. You don't copy any keys. WeInc renews the sign-in for you in the background.

  • Use a key instead: paste a key you create in Kit (ConvertKit) yourself. Use this if you prefer keys, or if you don't see the Connect with Kit (ConvertKit) button.

Your Kit (ConvertKit) sign-in belongs to your WeInc account, so once you've connected, you can reuse it on your other sites without signing in again.

What you need from Kit

  • Form ID (needed either way): the number of the Kit form people should join. In Kit, open Grow > Landing Pages & Forms, open the form and copy the number from its link.

  • V4 API key (key method only): in Kit, go to Settings > Developer, create a V4 API key and copy it. It starts with kit_. Kit's guide: Authentication.

  • A marketing opt-in box on your form. Without one, nobody is sent to Kit.

What WeInc can access

With Connect with Kit (ConvertKit), WeInc uses Kit's standard access (Kit offers only one level). WeInc uses it to add subscribers to your form and to show your account name. It does not send email or change your broadcasts.

Where to set it up

Form connections live in the builder, in the Analytics panel. Open your project, click the ··· (More panels) button in the top bar and choose Analytics. Scroll to Form submissions. Below it is a section called Send entries to.

The Analytics panel only appears in full once your site is published, so publish first. Only the project owner can add or change these connections.

Connect it

With Connect with Kit (ConvertKit)

  1. Under Send entries to, open the Add a destination… menu and choose Kit (ConvertKit).

  2. Click Connect with Kit (ConvertKit). Kit (ConvertKit) opens and asks you to approve WeInc. Approve it.

  3. You come back to the builder. If the form has closed, choose Kit (ConvertKit) in Add a destination… again. It now says Connected to <your Kit account>.

  4. Paste the Form ID.

  5. Click Save. The connection appears in the list with the On box ticked.

With a key

  1. Choose Kit (ConvertKit) in Add a destination…, then click Use a key instead.

  2. Fill in the V4 API key and Form ID.

  3. Click Save.

To switch back from the key fields, click Connect with Kit (ConvertKit) instead.

Test it

Click Test next to the connection. The test entry has no marketing opt-in, so Kit is not contacted and you see Test ran, nothing added: Visitor did not tick a marketing opt-in. That means it is set up. To check end to end, fill in your live form yourself with the opt-in box ticked and look for the new subscriber in Kit.

If something goes wrong

Each saved connection has a dot next to its name: blue means the last send worked, red means it failed, grey means it is paused. The last error is shown under the name.

  • "<field> is required" or "<field> doesn't look right" when saving: a value is missing or not in the expected format. Copy it again, with no extra spaces or characters.

  • "Kit (ConvertKit) is no longer connected. Reconnect it in the forms panel.": you used Connect with Kit (ConvertKit) and WeInc can no longer sign in to Kit (ConvertKit) for you (for example, access was removed in Kit (ConvertKit)). Remove the connection, choose Kit (ConvertKit) again and click Connect with Kit (ConvertKit).

  • "Access refused (401)" or "(403)": Kit (ConvertKit) did not accept the key or sign-in. With a key, create a new one. With Connect with Kit (ConvertKit), WeInc renews the sign-in and tries once more by itself; if it is still refused, connect again.

  • "Paused: the key was refused three times." If real form entries are refused three times in a row, WeInc pauses the connection so it stops failing. Test sends do not count toward this. Click the bin icon to remove it, then add it again (with a new key, or by clicking Connect with Kit (ConvertKit)).

  • Other errors (for example "Error 404"): usually a wrong Form ID. Check it in Kit, then remove and re-add the connection.

WeInc tries each send twice (one retry after a short pause) and waits up to 8 seconds for Kit (ConvertKit) to answer. The entry is always kept in Form submissions either way, so nothing is lost if a send fails.

Saved keys and settings can't be viewed or edited later. To change a value, remove the connection and add it again.

Pause or disconnect

  • Pause: untick the On box next to the connection. It shows Paused and nothing is sent until you tick it again.

  • Disconnect: click the bin icon (Remove). WeInc deletes the saved settings and any saved key. Anything already in Kit (ConvertKit) stays there.

To fully revoke access, also remove WeInc from your connected apps in Kit, or delete the API key if you used one. Any connection still using it will then fail and pause after three refused entries.
