Channel Users in Whippy

Use the Users tab on a channel to review and manage who can access that channel.

Written by Maria Cairns

Why it matters

Channel-level user access makes it possible to keep sensitive or specialized communication channels limited to the right people.

Key Concepts

Channel Users tab: The Users tab lists users with access to a selected channel.

Search Name and Email: The channel users table can be searched by user name or email.

Add user: Admins can add eligible users to a channel from the Users tab.

Step-by-Step: Manage channel users

  1. Open Settings > Channels.

  2. Select the channel you want to manage.

  3. Open the Users tab.

  4. Use Search Name and Email to find a user already assigned to the channel.

  5. Click the add user control if you need to add someone to the channel.

  6. Select the eligible user and confirm the change.

  7. Ask the user to refresh Whippy if their channel access does not appear immediately.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use channel users for channel access and roles for broader permissions.

  • Review channel access when a teammate changes teams or responsibilities.

  • Admins may already have broader access and may not appear in add-user lists the same way as standard users.

  • Keep channel access limited to people who need to work in that channel.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Possible Cause

Fix

A user is not available to add

The user may be disabled, already added, or covered by admin access.

Check the user's status in Users and teams, then review the current channel user list.

Search does not find a user

The search term may not match the user's name or email.

Clear the search and try a broader term.

A user still cannot see the channel

The user's session may be stale or another permission may be missing.

Ask the user to refresh, then review their role and channel access.
