Why it matters

Lists give you a simple way to group contacts for one-time or fixed-audience messaging. Unlike segments, lists do not update automatically. They are ideal for event invites, imported customer groups, or any audience that should remain unchanged unless you update it manually.

Key Concepts

Lists: Static collections of contacts created manually or through file upload. Lists remain the same until you explicitly add or remove contacts.

Upload Tags: Each time you upload contacts, Whippy applies an upload tag to every imported contact. This tag identifies the list and allows you to message the group quickly.

Channel Opt-in: When creating a list, you choose which channels the contacts are opted into (SMS, WhatsApp, voice, email).

Search and Filters: Lists can be searched and filtered by name, creation date, or last updated date.

Difference from Segments: Lists are static, while segments are dynamic and update automatically as data changes.

Step-by-Step: Working With Lists

  1. Go to Data and select Lists.

  2. Review the All Lists table showing all lists in your organization.

  3. Use the search bar or filters to find specific lists by name or date.

  4. To create a new list, click the cloud-and-arrow Create contacts list button in the top right.

  5. Enter a unique name for the list.

  6. Select the channels to opt the list into.

  7. Add contacts using one of two methods:

    • Upload a file in .csv, .tsv, .txt, .xls, .xlsx, or .xml format.

    • Paste phone numbers using Command+V or Control+V.

  8. If uploading a file, review the preview table and map each column to the correct header.

  9. Deselect any rows you do not want to include.

  10. Click Save Contacts to finalize the list.

  11. Open the newly created list from the sidebar or from the All Lists page to review its contacts.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use lists for audiences that should not change over time, such as event RSVPs or imported lead batches.

  • Name lists clearly and consistently so they are easy to identify later.

  • Remember that every upload generates an upload tag; you can use this tag to target the group without navigating to Lists.

  • Ensure column mapping is correct when uploading files to prevent data errors.

  • Use filters and search tools to keep your lists organized as your workspace grows.
