Why it matters
Duplicate contacts can split contact information and activity across multiple records. Merging contacts gives you one consolidated contact while allowing you to choose which details from each record should be retained.
Key Concepts
Contact to Merge: The duplicate contact you select to combine with another contact.
Field Selection: Before completing the merge, Whippy displays both contacts side by side. You can select which information to keep from each contact.
Final Contact: After selecting the fields you want to retain, Whippy shows the resulting contact so you can review and edit its information before completing the merge.
Step-by-Step: Merge Duplicate Contacts
Open Contacts and select one of the duplicate contacts.
Click the three-dot menu and select Merge contacts.
Search for and select the contact you want to merge with.
Click Continue.
In Step 2, Whippy displays both contacts side by side.
Select the fields you want to keep from each contact. You can choose individual fields such as:
Name
Email
Phone
External ID
Address
Birthdate
Language
Use Select all if you want to keep all available information from one of the contacts.
Click Continue.
In Step 3, review the final merged contact. You can make any necessary changes to the contact information before completing the merge.
Click Merge to confirm.
Once completed, the two records are combined into a single contact.
Tips and Best Practices
Review both records carefully before selecting which fields to keep.
Don't assume you need to keep all fields from one contact — you can combine information from both.
Pay particular attention to phone number, email, and external ID, especially for contacts synced with external systems.
Use the final review screen to confirm the resulting contact is correct before clicking Merge.
If both records contain different valid information, select the appropriate fields from each rather than simply using Select all.
Troubleshooting
Issue | What to do |
Merge contacts is not visible | Confirm that you have permission to update contacts. |
Can't find the duplicate contact | Search using the contact's name, phone number, email, or external ID. |
The wrong information is selected | In Step 2, change the selected fields before clicking Continue. |
The final contact information isn't correct | Update the fields on the Step 3 verification screen before merging. |
The merge fails | Confirm both contacts still exist, refresh Contacts, and try again. If the issue persists, contact your Whippy administrator or support. |
