Online tutoring with Chromebooks
Whizzimo recommends using Zoom for online tutoring. If this is not possible because your student has a Chromebook, it can work for online tutoring with the right tools and preparation. To set up Chromebooks for tutoring, both the educator and the student need to use Chrome Remote Desktop. Below are the details for getting started, along with important considerations.
Important things to know
Ensure the Chromebook can install Chrome web extensions or Android apps.
Chromebooks do not support video and audio through Chrome Remote Desktop. Use a separate web meeting program like Google Meet for communication.
Both you and your students need time to learn and set up the system properly.
Whizzimo does not officially support Chromebooks and cannot provide technical support beyond this guide.
Using Chrome Remote Desktop
Chrome Remote Desktop is designed for remote access to your own computer or for tech support purposes. However, it can also facilitate screen sharing and remote control for online learning. Note that it supports only one-to-one sessions.
To set up Chrome Remote Desktop for tutoring:
Visit Chrome Remote Desktop on your computer and follow the instructions to install the program.
On the Chromebook, open the Google Play Store and install the Chrome Remote Desktop app. (If the Chromebook is provided by a school, you may need assistance from the school’s IT department.)
Once both devices are set up, open the Chrome Remote Desktop app on your computer. Select Remote Support, click Generate Code, and share the code with the student.
The student should visit Chrome Remote Desktop Support in the Chrome browser, enter the access code, and click Connect on the Give Support card.
Approve the connection by clicking Share. The student will now have remote control access to your computer.
When the session is finished, open the Chrome Remote Desktop app and click Stop Sharing to end the session.
🔔 For best results, test the setup before your first tutoring session to ensure everything works smoothly.
