Word Wizard Example Prompts and Tips

Use the examples below to guide your prompts so you can get the best results.

Updated this week

Note: This is the first version of the Word Wizard, and we’d love your input! Click the Share Feedback button in the Word Wizard to let us know what you like, what you'd like us to add, and what isn't working quite right.

Example prompts

Getting started

To begin, try prompts like:

  • I’d like the following words: run, jump, swim.

  • I’m looking for two-syllable words that begin with gl, pl, or sl.

  • Please give me one-syllable words with the short a, i, and o sounds.

  • I need five-letter words that include a vowel team.

  • Please share words that end with the suffixes -s and -es.

Refining your wordlist

Once you’ve generated a list, you can refine it with prompts like:

  • Please remove all proper nouns.

  • Remove the words cat, bat, and sat from the list.

  • I’d like two-syllable words too. (This works well after asking for one-syllable words, for example.)

  • Include nonsense words as well.

  • Limit to my tiles. (This filters your wordlist to match only the tiles on your Tileboard. For example, if you only have the a–z tiles, words containing “ar” won’t appear. Scroll down to the Exact Tiles filter card to see your current tiles and make any edits to refine your wordlist further.)

Tips for getting the best results

  • The most important tip: Write in complete sentences when entering prompts.

  • If you’re asking for multiple phonics characteristics, try adding them one or two at a time.

  • Type 'undo' or 'redo' if you change your mind or if the Word Wizard misunderstood you and you'd like to rephrase your request.

  • If you enter a message and do not see the wordlist update, you can try entering 'try again' as a message.

  • Once you’ve created a wordlist, scroll down to view the filters used in the search. From there, you can add, update, or remove filters to fine-tune your results. You can move back and forth between the Word Wizard and the filter cards until your wordlist is just right!
