Supported Payout Methods

There are several convenient ways to receive payouts through Wingspan.

U.S. Bank Account

You can receive payouts to a US-based bank account via bank transfer (ACH) or through Instant Payout. You can connect your account to Wingspan securely through Plaid, or by manually entering your routing and account number.

International Bank Account

You can receive free payments in over 37 currencies and 180+ countries. Make sure to visit our guide to Currency Conversion Fees, as well as our guide to international payments for more information.

Debit Card

You can also receive Instant Payouts by connecting a debit card. Most debit cards issued by U.S. banks are compatible. You can request debit card payouts anytime, including weekends and holidays.

  1. Instant Payout is only available to contractors within the U.S. and Canada

  2. The Wingspan debit card should not be used. Instead, default the Wingspan Wallet directly.

Wingspan Wallet (U.S. Only)

The Wingspan Wallet is a business banking account you can use to receive payouts and deposit funds for business expenses. You can also make purchases with a virtual or physical debit card tied to the account.

Payout Timing

Wingspan supports two types of payout speeds: standard and instant.

Standard Payouts

Standard payouts are processed over the bank transfer (ACH) network. Usually, these payouts take 1-2 business days.

International payouts typically take 3-5 business days, depending on the recipient's country and bank processing times.

Instant Payouts

Instant payouts are sent to an eligible bank account or debit card and arrive within one business day (typically in under an hour). Instant payouts cost 2% of the gross income on the related invoice, with a minimum fee of $0.50.

Key Restrictions of Instant Payouts: If your default payout method is set to instant, payouts will process as soon as your client processes the invoice to the "Paid" status. Ensure that an instant payout method has been added and set appropriately. If you recently switched from an instant payout method to a standard payout method, payouts will no longer arrive instantly and will follow the standard payout timeline of 1–2 business days.

  • Instant payouts cannot accelerate unpaid or pending invoices. Funds are transferred instantaneously only after a client successfully processes and pays an invoice.

  • Payments in process cannot be switched to Instant Payouts.

  • Ensure that the invoice is eligible for instant payouts and that a compatible debit card is set up as the instant payout method.

Setting Up and Troubleshooting Instant Payouts

To use instant payouts in Wingspan, follow these steps:

  1. Add an Instant Payout Method: Go to your payout methods and add a compatible bank account as your instant payout method.

    1. If your bank account isn't compatible, you'll be prompted for a debit card. (You must try with a bank account first.)

  2. Choose How to Use Instant Payouts:

    • Set the instant payout method as your default payout method. This ensures all future payouts are processed instantly.

    • For individual in-progress invoices, request an instant payout directly from the invoice on your Invoices page. If you do not see the option to choose between standard and instant payouts, ensure that:

      • An instant payout method has been added and set appropriately.

      • You are viewing an eligible in-progress invoice.

Payout Deductions

With Wingspan, you can split payments with collaborators, automatically withhold some of your income for taxes, and set aside money for business expenses:

Contractors

When you receive a payment from a client, if you've created a split payment with another contractor, the payments to your subcontractors will be deducted from the invoice and paid to your contractors. If your client paid with a card, a standard 2.9% processing fee will be deducted. The resulting amount is your Gross Income.

Tax Withholdings

If you are using our Tax Withholdings feature, Wingspan sets aside a portion of your remaining Gross Income.

Payout Method and Wingspan Wallet

The remaining Net Income will be deposited to your connected payout method. If you've enabled your Wingspan Wallet, you can choose to have a portion of the deposit sent there to use for business or personal expenses.
