When should I use the box or cornered method of fragmenting?

There are two ways in which a user can fragment a Category. This article will explain the difference and when to use either of them.

When you're in the Fragmenting tool, you've probably seen the selection in the top-center of the sidebar, for type of fragment method? It's this guy:

You have a choice: ⏹ or ⏺

Yeah, you've seen it. Maybe played around with it. But let's dive in to when you should use either the box (default) or corner method to fragmenting.

1. ⏹ - When to use the Box (default) method?

The box method is the quickest and easiest. Because of this, we have made it the default when you start the fragmenting tool (you can see this because the lefthand side icon is highlighted).

This method works best when the menu is flat, and not skewed

The most common types of menu that work best with the box method are:

  • A high quality image of a menu, that is not taken with a camera at an angle

  • A PDF of a menu (not a scan that have been PDF'd)

  • A limited menu (few items) not skewed.

To use it, simply click and drag a rectangle around the Category you wish to fragment. When you have drawn the initial box, you can then use the corners to modify the rectangle. Click the green Check to accept, or the Red trash to start again.

Remember: You can use the fragment tool before or after you have added a Category Title and/or Description.

2. ⏺ - Using the Corner Method

If Box is the simple version, Corner is the more advanced method.

Transcribing Items in woflow requires the use of patterns, which rely on boxes being drawn around Items.

Because of this, what happens if the menu you are using has been taken at a funny angle so that the line of words for the Title or Description don't actually fit in a box if you were to draw around it? I'm talking about this sort of Item:

Yeah, it doesn't work. This is because the menu has a perspective due to how the photograph was taken.

So to be able to transcribe this Item and the rest of the Category, we'll need to ensure the lines in the fragment are straight. To do this, we use the Corner method, to straighten the fragment, as if it were taken with a camera straight on.

By marking a mark at each corner we can tell the tool that these 4 marks should equal a rectangle. Makes sense right?

Using Corner method in woflow: Click each corner, starting with the top left and moving clockwise. You can then straighten up the sides before accepting the fragment.
