MCQs are a fundamental tool to assess knowledge, gauge participant understanding, and promote active learning.
👆 Contrary to a Poll question, a multiple-choice question must have at least one correct answer. You can discover our Poll question here: Poll.
Create a MCQ
First, when you are in your event, click on New Question, choose the Multiple choice question type, under Assess Understanding.

Customize the MCQ
Once you have opened your multiple-choice question type, you can personalize it and tailor it to your needs. Start by adding the question you want to ask.
Next, enter the several answers your audience can vote for. By clicking on the +, you can add more answers to the question.
Three options are available in the right-hand side menu:
Allow comments allows your participants to add comments to explain their answers
When you are done preparing your question, you can either click on Save or Display now at the bottom of the screen to launch your Wooclap event.

If you'd like to ask the audience to fill in a series of questions on their own, use a self-paced questionnaire. Discover more here: Self-paced session.
If you'd like for a self-paced questionnaire to include questions you've already created, use the Import function to copy those questions into your questionnaire. Discover how to import already created questions here: How to import previously created questions.
Display the MCQ
Once you have clicked on Display Now or Display, the question you have prepared will appear on your screen. You can then invite your participants to join your event and answer.
Once your participants have given their answers, you have three options on the right side of the screen to visualize the answers:
Results: lets you show the incoming answers and how many answers each proposition has received.
Donut chart: lets you display the received answers as proportional slices. Each slice represents one option, and the size of each slice is dictated by the percentage of answers received for that option.
Correct answer: shows the correct answer and closes the voting for the question.
☝️ To keep the Donut chart clear and readable, options that receive 4 or more responses but make up less than 5% of the total answers are automatically combined into an Others category.
💡 MCQs don't just measure understanding when well-designed, they actively build it. Choosing between plausible options forces students to discriminate between correct and incorrect information, which strengthens memory far more than re-reading would. This is formative assessment in action: low-stakes, continuous, and immediately actionable.
They also unlock one of the most effective peer learning techniques: Peer Instruction (Eric Mazur). Ask the question, let students vote, have them discuss with a neighbour, then vote again. The second round consistently produces deeper understanding and Wooclap's real-time results make the shift visible to everyone in the room.
💡 WooTip: Enable the comment option and ask students to justify why the option is wrong, that's where the real learning happens.
