How do students use Speech to Text in Writable?

Review suggested options for using dictation on several different devices

If you plan on using speech to text to assist your students with the writing process, here are some options that are already built-in your students' devices.

❗ Note: These are third-party features that work inside Writable.

Google Chromebook

Turn on built-in Accessibility features to use dictation on your Chromebook.

Find accessibility features to enable dictation on Chromebook.

1. At the bottom-right corner of the screen, select the time or press 'Alt + Shift + s'.

2. Select 'Settings'.

3. At the bottom-left corner of the screen, select 'Advanced'.

4. In the 'Accessibility' section, select 'Manage accessibility features'.

❗ Note: To have quick access to accessibility features, turn on 'Always show accessibility options in the system menu'. This optional feature will allow you to view your accessibility options within the 'System Menu' without having to go to 'Settings'.

5. Under 'Keyboard and text input,' click the toggle to turn on 'Enable dictation (speak to type)'.

❗ Note: Blue indicates 'On,' and gray indicates 'Off'.

Log into Writable on your Chromebook to begin using dictation.

1. Open the Google Chrome browser and go to app.writable.com.

2. Select 'I'm a student' and log in.

3. Click on the assignment.

4. Click on 'Read & Write'.

5. Click in the writing area.

6. Click on the microphone icon in the lower-right corner of the screen to begin speaking. Spoken words will be recorded by the device, and automatically converted into text in the writing area of the assignment.

❗ Note: You can also press 'Search + d' or press 'Launcher + d' to begin speaking.

Microsoft Windows PC

Turn on built-in Online Speech Recognition to use dictation on Windows devices.

Find privacy settings to enable dictation on Windows device.

1. Click on the Windows logo key.

2. Click 'Settings'.

3. Click 'Privacy'.

4. In the 'Windows permissions' section, select 'Speech'.

5. Under 'Speech', click the toggle to turn on 'Online Speech Recognition'.

❗ Note: Blue indicates 'On,' and gray indicates 'Off'.

Log into Writable on your Windows PC to begin using dictation.

1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser and go to app.writable.com.

2. Select 'I'm a student' and log in.

3. Click on the assignment.

4. Click on 'Read & Write'.

5. Click in the writing area.

6. Press the Windows logo key + H to open the dictation toolbar, and begin speaking. Spoken words will be recorded by the device, and automatically translated into text in the writing area of the assignment.

❗ Note: After initial setup, you can now just press the 'Windows logo key + H' to begin using dictation again.

MacBook

Turn on built-in Keyboard Dictation to dictate text on MacBook devices.

Find system preferences to enable dictation on MacBook.

1. Click on the Apple menu located in the top-left corner of your screen.

2. Click 'System Preferences'.

3. Click 'Keyboard'.

4. Click 'Dictation'.

5. Under 'Dictation,' click the 'On' radio button.

❗ Note: Check the 'Enhanced Dictation' box to allow your MacBook device to interpret your voice offline.

6. Select your keyboard shortcut for using dictation.

Log into Writable on your MacBook to begin using dictation.

1, Open the Safari or Chrome browser and go to app.writable.com.

2. Select 'I'm a student' and log in.

3. Click on the assignment.

4. Click on 'Read & Write'.

5. Click in the writing area.

6. Click 'Edit'.

7. Click 'Start Dictation' and begin speaking. Spoken words will be recorded by the device, and automatically converted into text in the writing area of the assignment.

❗ Note: You can also use the keyboard shortcut you established to start dictation.

Apple iPad

Turn on built-in Keyboard Dictation to dictate text on iPad devices.

Find keyboard settings to enable dictation on Apple device.

1. Launch the 'Settings' app from your Home screen.

2. Click on 'General'.

3. Click on 'Keyboard'.

4. Click the toggle to turn on to 'Enable Dictation'.

❗ Note: Green indicates 'On,' and gray indicates 'Off'.

Log into Writable on your iPad to begin using dictation.

1. Open the Safari or Chrome browser and go to app.writable.com.

2. Select 'I'm a student' and log in.

3. Click on the assignment.

4. Click on 'Read & Write'.

5. Click in the writing area.

6. Click the microphone in the bottom-left side of keyboard, and begin speaking. Spoken words will be recorded by the device, and automatically converted into text in the writing area of the assignment.

❗ Note: You may be prompted to 'Enable Dictation' for the microphone to be used for dictation.
