Writable is a digital writing platform that scaffolds student learning and builds lifelong writing and reading skills in grades 3-12, while saving teachers time on daily instruction and feedback. Writable is research-backed and proven to grow great writers. As students write, cycles of feedback and revision drive them towards improvement and growth.

Checking Student Progress and Writing

Parents and guardians can review student writing assignments and feedback by logging into their student's account directly.

Once you have logged into your student's Writable account, we recommend using the Writing Journal to review previous assignments and feedback. This can be found on the left menu in the student dashboard:

How Students Use Writable

Writable and GenAI

Writable and HMH take a human-centered approach to advanced technology like generative AI (GenAI), one that enables and extends the valuable work of teachers, blending the best of technology with the best of the classroom experience.

Teachers are supported through AI suggested comments and draft scores. Teachers will review these comments and scores, and edit them before sending to students. It's important to note that these comments do come from the teacher and students can engage in deeper conversation with their teacher about their grades or feedback.

We understand that AI literacy and policy is a journey and each district and community take a unique path. Writable provides educators with a great degree of control over how AI features are used in the classroom. We recommend checking with your school or district to learn more about the AI features they are utilizing.

Privacy and Security

HMH and Writable have signed the latest privacy agreements put out by both state and national groups, such as the Student Data Privacy Consortium. The goal of these data privacy agreements is to set standards of both practice and expectations around student privacy such that all parties involved have a common understanding of expectations. HMH is also a founding member of the EdSafe AI Industry Council which uses the SAFE Benchmarks Framework to guide policy and practice through shared language, objectives, and outcomes and ensure the development of appropriate guidelines and guardrails for use as AI evolves.

Writable anonymizes all writing submitted to OpenAI, which retains anonymized data for only 30 days to monitor abuse. This means that OpenAI does not use the writing submitted in Writable to “train their model”.

Getting Support from Writable

Writable is a district- or school-purchased program and is teacher-guided, meaning that students cannot access Writable for assignments or feedback without a teacher first assigning work to them. Writable maintains several customer support channels to support teachers who are working with your students.

If you have questions about an assignment or grade in Writable, please talk to your student’s teacher. Teachers can always contact Writable Support through support@writable.com or via our Live Chat channel. Requests for student account or data deletion can also be sent through your teacher or school leader.

For additional questions about student data or privacy policies, please contact us at privacy@writable.com.
