Vehicles vs. fitments
A vehicle is a specific entry in the vehicle database, identified by a unique combination of vehicle attributes such as Make → Model → Year → Submodel. For example:
Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → LE
A fitment is the relationship between a product and a vehicle. It tells X-Cart that a particular product is compatible with that specific vehicle.
Because fitments connect products and vehicles, you can navigate the relationship in either direction:
Starting from a vehicle, you can select a specific vehicle (for example, Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → LE) in the Vehicles & Fitments section and view all products that are compatible with it.
Starting from a product, you can open the product details page, switch to the Fitment tab, and view all vehicles that the product fits.
Finding products compatible with a vehicle
If you want to see which products are compatible with a particular vehicle, first locate that vehicle in the Vehicles & Fitments section. X-Cart provides two ways to do this:
Option 1: Start from the Find Vehicle tab (Use this option if you already know the vehicle you are looking for.)
Enter the vehicle attributes (for example, Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → LE) using the filters at the top of the page. Once the matching vehicle appears in the results list, click its last-level value (for example, LE) to open the list of products compatible with that vehicle.
Option 2: Use the Make items tab to browse the vehicle hierarchy.
Navigate through the hierarchy one level at a time by selecting the appropriate values:
Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → LE
After selecting the final level, click Manage products (N), where N is the number of products compatible with the selected vehicle. This opens the list of products associated with that vehicle.
Both methods lead to the same result—the list of products whose fitments include the selected vehicle. The only difference is how you locate the vehicle: by searching for it (Find Vehicle) or by browsing the vehicle hierarchy (Make items).
Finding vehicles compatible with a product
If you want to see which vehicles are compatible with a particular product, open the product's details page in the X-Cart Admin area and switch to the Fitment tab.
The Fitment tab displays all vehicles associated with the product. Each row represents a vehicle identified by its complete combination of vehicle attributes, for example:
Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → LE
This list contains all vehicle fitments assigned to the product, allowing you to verify its compatibility with specific vehicles or review its complete fitment coverage.
What is fitment type?
A fitment type shows how a product is categorized based on what it fits. In other words, whether it is made for a specific car, compatible with multiple vehicles, or a universal item anyone can use.
Every product in an X-Cart automotive store has one of three fitment types:
Regular Product
| What it means: The product has no vehicle compatibility data, and its selection does not rely on fitment logic at all.
When to use: For things like general merchandise (like a branded T-shirt), accessories, tools that can be used for any vehicle.
Storefront behavior: The product appears in search results regardless of whether the customer has selected a vehicle. It is never filtered by the vehicle selector. |
Vehicle-Specific | What it means: The product is explicitly linked to one or more specific vehicles via fitment entries (e.g., 2019 Toyota Camry).
When to use: For parts that only fit certain vehicles — brake pads for a 2024 Toyota Corolla, a bumper for a 2022 Ford F-150, etc.
Storefront behavior:

Universal Fit | What it means: The product fits every vehicle. No specific fitment entries are needed.
When to use: For products that are truly universal — seat covers, floor mats, air fresheners, universal phone mounts, microfiber towels, etc.
Storefront behavior: The product always appears regardless of which vehicle the customer has selected. It shows "Universal Fit" on the product page. |

How fitments work technically
The fitment is always created at the lowest configured level of your vehicle hierarchy.
In a 4-level setup (Make/Model/Year/Submodel), a fitment links a product to a specific Submodel.
In a 3-level setup (Make/Model/Year), a fitment links a product to a specific Year.
In a 2-level setup (Make/Model), a fitment links a product to a specific Model.

Support for 3-level vehicle fitment data in an X-Cart store with a 4-level MMY hierarchy
Some catalog data providers may supply vehicle fitment data using only the first three MMY levels—for example:
Toyota → Corolla → 2024
In this case, the omitted fourth level (for example, Submodel) acts as a wildcard, meaning the product is compatible with all submodels of the specified vehicle. This approach helps reduce the size of fitment data by eliminating the need to repeat identical records for every submodel.
X-Cart fully supports this scenario.
If your store uses a 4-level MMY hierarchy and already contains vehicles such as:
Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → LE
Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → SE
Toyota → Corolla → 2024 → XSE
then, when an automotive integration imports a 3-level vehicle path (Toyota → Corolla → 2024), X-Cart automatically expands it into individual fitments for every matching submodel available in the store.
As a result, the product will be associated with all compatible vehicles under that Make, Model, and Year combination, without requiring the data provider to list each submodel explicitly.
Managing fitment information
You can manage the fitments (MMY combinations) and fitment type information for any product in your automotive store catalog using the Fitment tab of product details. For details, see Managing fitment information of a specific product.
Fitment notes
Each fitment entry can include optional notes — free-text annotations that provide additional compatibility details beyond the vehicle level; for example:
Engine size requirements: "Fits 2.0L engine only"
Drivetrain restrictions: "For 4WD models only"
Production date ranges: "For vehicles built after 06/2023"
Exclusions: "Does not fit hybrid models"
Trim-level details: "Requires Sport Package"
Fitment notes are visible to customers on the product page and help them verify compatibility when the vehicle hierarchy alone isn't enough.
