Viewing map layers and using timeline

Xweather Protect

Map layers can be combined to support dynamic weather data analysis. Layers are organized into groups for easier discovery and context. Only one layer group can be active on the map at a time, but the Severe Weather group can complement any selected group.

Managing map layers

  1. On the map, select Map Layers.

    The Map Layers pane opens.

  2. Enable the group that you want to view.
    The available groups are:

    • Severe weather

    • General weather

    • Wind

    • Air quality

    • Climatology

  3. In the group, enable or disable individual layers as needed.

Only one layer group can be active at a time. The exception is Severe weather, which you can use together with any other group.

  4. The Severe Weather group can be switched on or off to add critical weather context to your analysis.

  5. To close the Map layers pane, select X.
The pane closes, and the legends for the selected layers stay on the map.

Using timeline

The map layers work with the timeline, so you can play weather data as animations and analyze how weather patterns change. The timeline shows historical data up to the past week and forecast data up to the next 14 days.

Selecting time ranges

  1. In the lower left corner of the map, select the time range button, for example, Last 4 hours.
    The Time range window opens.

  2. From the Select a preset duration list, select a time range.
    The available time ranges are:

    • Last 24 hours

    • Last 4 hours

    • Last 2 hours

    • ± 24 hours

    • Next 24 hours

    • Next 3 days

    • Next 7 days

    • Next 14 days

  3. To keep the timeline up to date, enable Auto-update timeline.
The timeline keeps the selected duration, and the start and end times move forward automatically.

  4. Select Apply.
The timeline shows the selected time range.

To view the past week in 24-hour intervals, select Previous week (24 h intervals) in the Time range window instead of a preset duration.

Playing animations

You can play an animation when the selected layers have historical or forecast data for the selected time range. When the data finishes loading, the Play button appears on the timeline.

  1. Select the time period you are interested in on the timeline.

  2. On the left side of the timeline, select Play.
The animation starts, and Play changes to Pause. A marker on the timeline shows the time of the current animation frame.

  3. To pause the animation, select Pause.

  4. To loop the animation, select the loop button on the right side of the timeline.

  5. To set the playback speed, select the settings button on the right side of the timeline, and then select a speed: 0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 1.5×, or 2×.

  6. To return to the default time range, select Reset next to the time range button.

  7. Use the buttons on the right side of the timeline to loop the animation and set its speed.
