Deer-resistant plants can be used to minimize the impact of deer in your garden, but the success of these plants in deterring deer may vary by location, age and type of the deer population, and the availability of other food sources.
There are very few plant selections that are completely deer-proof. Deer tend to avoid spiky/thorny, strongly-scented, and toxic/unpalatable species. However, young deer may need to learn what is/is not tasty, so it's not uncommon to see young deer browse plants older deer avoid. Similarly, hungry deer may have different standards regarding what's edible.
Tips:
β Try a commercially available deer-repellent, or make your own! These are usually based on scent and taste deterrents.
β Be sure to follow the directions to get sufficient coverage, and reapply regularly (reapplication is usually needed after heavy rain). Your contractor may be able to advise on this as well.
