If a sales tax payment has failed, you may have received a notice from the relevant state — this will usually tell you the reason for the failure, which is a good starting point. The most common reasons are covered below, along with what to do next in each case.
1. Insufficient funds
The most common reason for a failed payment is that there weren't enough funds in your bank account at the time the payment was attempted. ACH debit payments are pulled automatically any time after the 12th of the month, so it's important to ensure your account is sufficiently funded ahead of time.
What to do: Check your account balance and contact your account manager — they'll arrange for the payment to be resubmitted once funds are available.
2. Incorrect bank details on file
If the account number, routing number, or other banking details provided to Yonda are incorrect, the payment will be rejected by your bank. This can happen if details were entered incorrectly during onboarding, or if you've changed bank accounts without notifying us.
What to do: Contact your account manager to verify and update your bank details. Once corrected, they'll resubmit the payment.
3. Payment blocked by the state
In some cases, a state tax authority may block a payment from a specific bank — this is uncommon but does happen. It can occur with certain international banks or accounts that the state's system doesn't recognise.
What to do: Reach out to your account manager as soon as possible. They'll investigate and work with you on an alternative payment method for that state.
What happens next?
Regardless of the reason, a failed payment should be resolved as quickly as possible to avoid penalties and interest charges from the state. Our team will work with you to resubmit the payment once the underlying issue is fixed.
If you've received a notice from a state about a failed or overdue payment, please forward it to your account manager straight away so we can identify the issue and act quickly.
