My Client is Giving Assignments Beyond the Scope of What We Agreed Upon

It's common for clients to ask for revisions on a freelancer's work. They might even change their mind about their whole request as the project develops. Of course, a freelancer can continue working on a project as it evolves, but they don't have to continue a project once the original request has been delivered.

To be clear, filing this type of dispute will not get a freelancer out of work that they've already agreed to do. So, if at any point in the course of the project, the freelancer said they would do the disputed work (and the client never communicated that they no longer wanted it) - filing this type of dispute will be of no help. It will be the freelancer's responsibility in that case to work out how to settle the matter with the client.

Below, we'll explain what to do when a client is giving assignments beyond the scope of what has been agreed to.

First - talk to the client.

If it can be avoided, it's always better to settle an issue with your client by yourself rather than bringing in ZehMizeh staff. Even if the ZMZ staff rules a dispute in your favor, the client will still be posting a review of you at the end of the project. Creating an official dispute about them may leave them with a bad impression, so you want to do your best to resolve issues yourself and only file a dispute when you must.

Second, file a dispute.

After discussing it or sending a project closure request that hasn't worked out, submit a dispute to the ZMZ staff. This function can be found on the "Help" page, the last of the five pages listed at the top.

This is simplest if you have a milestone posted that your client has not paid. Submit a dispute on that milestone and describe the details of your issue in your submission.

If you don't have an open milestone, you can also send a general inquiry, with the subject line "Client is Asking for Work Beyond Agreement." ZMZ staff will reach out to both the client and freelancer to get more details. Both sides have to submit their reasons for why or why not the project should be considered completed. ZMZ will make this determination based on the original project description, the freelancer's project proposal, and the other messages they exchanged since the project began.

If ZMZ concludes that the project has not been finished according to what was agreed upon, the project will move back to the "Work in Progress" status. If we conclude that everything that was agreed upon has been finished, we may close the project and mark it as completed by the freelancer.

When it comes to interpreting the scope of the agreement, we generally lean in favor of the freelancer. As long as the freelancer's understanding of the agreement could match what had been communicated between the two users, we will allow them to end the project if they want to.
