If you look at the link to the "Messages" page at the top of the screen, you should see a number in a yellow circle... that number represents how many unread messages you have from all of your message threads.
Alternatively, when you open the "Messages" page, you'll see your message thread list on the left side of the screen. Every thread that has unread messages will have a black circle with the number of unread messages inside.
