In a project-based project, the freelancer can divide his work in sections (called "milestones") and get paid as each one is completed.

But even after work on a milestone has been started, the freelancer can cancel it as long as they haven't yet submitted the work.

There are two important things to know before canceling an active milestone:

First: Canceling a milestone means forfeiting the right to get paid for any of the work that was done for that milestone.

If a freelancer does want to get paid for the work they did, they should get the client to accept a new milestone to replace the one they want to cancel before canceling it. That way, the client will re-establish his commitment to pay for the work that was done.

Second: The money the client deposited to pay for the milestone's completion will be returned to him - but not the ZMZ fee. This is one reason you should be sure to communicate with your client before canceling active milestones.

Canceling an Active Milestone

To cancel a milestone, visit the "Milestones" tab of the project in question. Find the milestone you would like to modify from the list. You can cancel any milestone with the status "Milestone Payment Deposited" or "Revisions Requested."

Next to the colored status, you'll see an icon with three vertical dots in it. Click the icon. Then click the "Cancel milestone" option that appears.

A pop-up entitled "Are you sure you want to cancel?" will open. To cancel the milestone, click the button labeled "Yes - Cancel and Send Back Deposit."
