Setting Up Location Targeting

Location Targeting enables you to target ads to specific geographic locations. When you scroll down to the Targeting section of the ad group setup process, you will first encounter the Location option.

You can target your audience by:

  • City

  • Country

  • Region or States

  • DMA - Designated Market Area

  • Postcode

You can also narrow Location Targeting by exclusion.

Start including and/or excluding Location Targeting by clicking on the arrow-down icon and typing in a country, state, DMA (Designated Market Area) region, or postcode. While typing, Zemanta will be looking for typed-in geographic locations in real-time and will offer you the geographic locations found in the drop-down menu. Select your desired geographic location found by Zemanta by clicking on it.

You can combine both include and exclude options.

location lists to carve out specific geographic regions. The example below shows what to do if you would like to target Germany but exclude the region of Bavaria and the city of Berlin.

IMPORTANT: By default, Location Targeting is set to Worldwide, which means your ad group will target all locations if you don't change it to your desired location! All user traffic from China is blocked due to changes in local legislation.

Location Targeting reach estimator

When you input a geographic location you wish to target, a number will appear on the right side, along with the name. This number represents your estimated reach in this particular geographic location, reflecting only the Location Targeting settings and not other settings layered on top, e.g. Device, Language etc. The estimated reach is calculated based on the previous month's available bids.

Geographic locations are sorted from the highest estimated reach (at the top) to the lowest (at the bottom). To pick the geographic location with the biggest reach simply select the geographic location at the top of the selection menu.

Location Targeting warning messages

1. If you select a geographic location with a very low reach (under 100K), a warning will appear, letting you know to double-check if your selection is correct.

2. If you select several (two or more) different geographic locations where the sum of their estimated reach is very low (under 1M), a warning will appear, letting you know to double-check if your selection is correct.

3. If you select different geographic locations where the reach of one is significantly higher (100X) than another, a warning will appear, letting you know to double-check if your selection is correct.

Target postcodes in bulk

Many users have a pre-prepared list of postcodes that they want to target. This is a frequent use case, especially for the United States. Fortunately, you don't need to insert postcodes manually. Type in the country of the postcodes you want to target and select it from the drop-down menu under the ZIP/POSTCODES category. An additional ZIP codes field will appear where you will be able to paste your list of postcodes separated by commas (,).
