Overview

Matter based security allows law firms to set the access rights for specific matters as an opt-in process. Firm administrators can setup specific members in their law firm to have two types of security group permissions. By default, all matters are open to all members until you set security on the matter.

Two types of security group permissions:

  • Matter Security - Allow members to restrict another member's access to a matter

  • Matter Security Override - Allow members to override the security for a matter

Add Matter Security Permission To A Security Group

As a firm administrator, you can setup security group permissions to include the "Matter Security" option which will allow members to restrict another member's access to a matter. You can also include the "Matter Security Override" option to allow members to override the security for a matter.
โ€‹
โ€‹Note: You must have "Matter Security" option selected to choose the "Matter Security Override" option. If you check the checkbox for "Matter Security Override", then the "Matter Security" checkbox will automatically be checked for you.

  • Go to Firm Settings.

  • Click on the "Security Groups" tab.

  • From the security groups list, select "Edit" pencil icon under the "Actions" column for a security group.

  • Under Matter Security, you will see Configurations.

  • Under Configurations, check the "Permissions" checkbox next to "Matter Security".

  • Under Configurations, check the "Permissions" checkbox next to "Matter Security Override" if needed.

  • You have now added "Matter Security" and/or "Matter Security Override" permissions to the security group.

All members that are part of the security group will now have "Matter Security" and/or "Matter Security Override" permissions.

Setup Matter Security For A Specific Matter

Members who have "Matter Security" permissions can now setup specific members who will have access to the matter.

  • Go to the Matters list page.

  • Select a specific matter name to view the matter details page.

  • On the matter details page, select the "Security" tab.

  • By default, all matters are open to all members until you set security on the matter.

  • From the "Security" tab, click the "Setup Matter Security" button.

  • This will add your member to the security tab for the matter so that you can add more members.

    • You will not be able to remove yourself unless you are the only member in the security page. You will see a "Delete" trash can icon to remove yourself from the matter security and this will open the matter to all members again.

  • Click the "Add Member" button to allow specific members to have access to the matter.

You have now added specific members to have access to a matter.

Override Matter Security For A Specific Matter

Members who have "Matter Security Override" permissions can now add their member account to the matter security if they do not currently have access to a matter that has matter based security.

  • Go to the Matters list page.

  • Under the "Actions" column of a specific matter that has matter security, you will see a lock icon.

  • Click on the lock icon that says "Allow Access" when you hover over the icon.

  • You will see a pop up dialog that will ask if you would like to override access to the matter.

  • Click "Yes" to override the matter security.

    • This will add your member to the security tab for the matter and you will now have access to the specific matter.

  • You will be redirected to the matter security tab to view all members who have access to the specific matter.

  • Click the "Add Member" button to allow specific members to have access to the matter.

You have now overridden a specific matter security to add yourself to the matter and have access to a matter.
