This article explains how members set their password for the first time, or reset it if they forget it, using the magic link system. Whether access comes through checkout or an automation, this guide helps your members log in securely and manage their own credentials.

What is the Password Setup Process?

When a member gains access to a course or membership area, they no longer receive a system-generated password. Instead, they receive an email with a secure magic link that asks them to create their own password. This improves security and makes things easier for your members. It also means you don't have to manage their credentials by hand. The same flow applies whether it's a first-time login or a password reset request.

Configuring: How Users Set or Reset Password

Here are the different ways members get access to your courses, and how they create or reset their passwords.

Checkout (after purchasing an offer)

New members get access to a course or membership after completing checkout, as shown in the screenshot. Once they enter their email and full name, clicking “Proceed to checkout” enrols them in the offer. This also sends an automatic email with a magic login link, asking them to set their own password and access the course.

Manual enrolment by the admin

You can enrol a member in a course manually. Go to the contact's profile and select an offer from the dropdown menu. This sends the same magic link email, so the member can set their password and access the course.

Automated workflows or smart list actions

Members can be enrolled in a course automatically through workflows or smart list actions, using triggers like “Offer Access Granted” or “Membership New Signup”. These automations send a system email containing a magic link. When members click it, they're asked to set their password and get instant access.

After signing up, members see a confirmation message with a “View Dashboard” button. Clicking it takes them to a page where they're asked to set a new password before accessing the course.

Set Password

When they click it, they're asked to set a new password. After setting it, they're taken to the course or membership dashboard.

Password Reset

If a member forgets their password, they can go to the login page and click “Forgot Password”. They enter their email and receive a password reset link. This link takes them to a page to set a new password, and logs them in to the course or portal automatically once it's reset. Below is an example of the email a member receives when they request a reset link using the Forgot Password option.

Note: The password reset link expires in 2 hours. Make sure the password is reset within that time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I make sure new members receive the email to set their password?

Check that the member's email address is correct and that the system-generated "Courses Login URL" email is turned on. You can check the email delivery logs to confirm whether the email was sent.

Q: What should I do if a member says they didn't receive the password reset email?

Check the member's email address in your account and review the email delivery logs. Make sure your email domain is properly authenticated (for example, with SPF and DKIM) so emails aren't marked as spam. If needed, you can resend the email manually.

Q: Can I reset a member's password for them?

No. For security reasons, you can't reset a member's password directly. Instead, point them to the "Forgot Password" option, or resend the password setup email from your account.

Q: How do I monitor or troubleshoot password setup issues?

Check the member's status in the CRM to make sure they've been added to the membership portal properly. Review the email deliverability logs for problems like bounces or spam filtering. If the problem continues, contact the ZipLeads support team for help.
