ZipLeads lets you tag contacts straight from your email campaign statistics, based on what they did, such as opening an email or clicking a link. You can tag contacts who have already interacted with a campaign, or turn on automatic tagging for future interactions. This helps you organise engaged contacts, build targeted audience segments and send more relevant follow-up campaigns. This article shows you how to set up contact tagging, manage multiple tags and review tagging activity.

What is tagging contacts from campaign statistics?

Tagging contacts from campaign statistics lets you organise your audience based on how people interact with your email campaigns. You don't need to find engaged contacts by hand in the Contacts section. Instead, you pick recipients directly from the campaign's interaction data and apply tags. This makes it easy to group contacts by engagement and use those groups for future marketing.

For example, you can tag contacts who opened an email or clicked a link in a specific campaign. You can also turn on automatic tagging, so anyone who interacts with the campaign later gets the right tag without any extra work. You'll find this in the Statistics screen of any sent email campaign.

Key benefits of tagging contacts from campaign statistics

Tagging by campaign interaction turns your email engagement data into useful contact segments. Grouping recipients by their behaviour helps you spot interested people, makes follow-ups simpler and cuts down on repetitive contact admin.

  • Post-campaign segmentation: Tag contacts after a campaign has been sent, without setting up tagging conditions beforehand.

  • Automatic tagging: Automatically tag contacts who meet the selected interaction conditions in the future.

  • Engagement-based targeting: Find contacts who opened or clicked your campaign emails so your follow-ups are more relevant.

  • Multiple tag support: Apply several tags to contacts to build more detailed audience segments.

  • Simpler contact management: Manage engagement-based tagging right from campaign statistics, without opening individual contact records.

  • Tagging activity tracking: Review manual tagging through the tagging and Bulk Actions screens.

Manual tagging based on campaign interactions

Manual tagging lets you select contacts who have already interacted with a sent email campaign and add one or more tags to their records. It's handy when you want to organise contacts after reviewing how a campaign performed, or pick out recipients for a targeted follow-up.

For example, after reviewing a promotional email campaign, you might tag contacts who opened the email as Fall Campaign - Opened and contacts who clicked a link as Fall Campaign - Clicked.

Selecting contacts by interaction type

Campaign statistics group recipients by how they interacted with the email. Choosing an interaction category helps you find the contacts you want to tag. Common categories include:

  • Opened: Contacts who opened the email.

  • Clicked: Contacts who clicked a tracked link in the email.

  • Other interaction categories: Any other recipient lists shown in the campaign's statistics screen.

Once you open a category, you can select individual contacts or use the selection options to tag several contacts at once.

Applying multiple tags

Multiple tags let you describe contacts in more than one way. For example, a contact who clicked a promotional link could get both Interested in Product A and October Promotion. ZipLeads lets you apply multiple tags in the same tagging action.

Important: Applying a tag that a contact already has won't create a duplicate. Existing tags are kept.

Auto-Tag Future Interactions

Auto-Tag Future Interactions automatically adds your chosen tags to contacts who engage with the campaign after you turn it on. This keeps your engagement-based segments up to date without you having to go back to campaign statistics and tag people again.

For example, you can set up automatic tagging for the Opened category. When more contacts open the campaign email, ZipLeads automatically adds the tag to their contact records.

How automatic tagging works

Automatic tagging is set up for a selected interaction category in a sent campaign. The process is:

  1. Open the relevant campaign interaction category.

  2. Select All contacts.

  3. Choose the tags you want to apply.

  4. Turn on Auto-Tag Future Interactions.

Once it's on, the selected tags are added automatically whenever more contacts meet the interaction condition.

Important: Automatic tagging is for future interactions. To tag contacts who have already interacted with the campaign, use manual tagging.

Tagging before vs. after sending an email campaign

ZipLeads also lets you set up tagging from the Send or Schedule page before an email campaign goes out. This is separate from adding tags through the campaign's Statistics screen.

  • Before sending: Set up tags while preparing the campaign, using the Send or Schedule workflow.

  • After sending: Use campaign statistics to tag recipients based on their recorded interactions, or set up tagging for future interactions.

For instructions on creating tags while preparing a campaign, see Email Builder: Create New Tags in the Send or Schedule Page.

Tracking tagging activity and logs

Tracking tagging helps you confirm tags have been applied and gives you visibility of manual tagging activity. Knowing where ZipLeads records each kind of tagging is especially useful when you're working with large contact groups or troubleshooting tags.

Manual tagging activity

Manual tagging started from campaign statistics is recorded through the ZipLeads tagging and Bulk Actions features. You can use these records to review manual tagging and check the status of supported bulk actions.

For more guidance, see Bulk Actions For Contacts & SmartLists.

Automatic tagging activity

Contacts tagged through Auto-Tag Future Interactions don't appear as separate actions in the Bulk Actions log.

To check automatic tagging, review the campaign's interaction information and look at the tags on the contact records.

Limitations of campaign statistics tagging

Knowing the limits of campaign statistics tagging helps you choose the right way to manage contacts. Some limits apply only to automatic tagging, not to every campaign statistics action.

  • Invalid contacts: Automatic tagging isn't available for contacts in the Invalid category.

  • Order Details lists: Automatic tagging isn't supported for Order Details lists.

  • Tag removal: Campaign statistics tagging only adds tags. It can't remove existing tags.

  • Bulk Actions logging: Future automatic tagging isn't recorded as a Bulk Actions job.

To remove existing tags, use the contact management tools instead of campaign statistics tagging. For more on managing contact tags, see Adding Tags to Multiple Contacts.

How to tag contacts from campaign statistics

Choosing the right campaign, interaction category and tagging method makes sure tags go to the right contacts. Use the Statistics screen to tag contacts who have already interacted with a campaign, or turn on automatic tagging for future engagement.

Step 1: Open email campaign statistics

Start by finding the sent email campaign whose recipients you want to tag.

  1. Go to Marketing → Email Campaigns in your ZipLeads account.

  2. Find the email campaign you want to review.

  3. Click the three-dot menu next to the campaign.

  4. Select Statistics.

Step 2: Load campaign interaction data

Campaign statistics show interaction-level information, so you can find recipients based on how they engaged with the email.

  1. In the Statistics screen, click Load More to show more recipient interaction data.

  2. Find the interaction categories, such as Opened or Clicked.

  3. Select the category that matches the contacts you want to tag.

Step 3: Select contacts to tag

Picking the right recipients makes sure only the intended contacts get the tags.

  1. Open the interaction category you want.

  2. Review the contacts in the list.

  3. Select the individual contacts you want to tag, or use All to select the whole group.

  4. Click Add Tags.

Step 4: Apply tags to selected contacts

Tags help you identify contacts based on their campaign engagement. Use clear, descriptive tag names so your team can recognise what each tag is for when looking at contact records or building future segments.

  1. In the Add Tags window, enter or select the tag you want to apply.

  2. Add more tags if you need to.

  3. Apply the selected tags to the contacts.

The tags will be added to the selected contact records.

Step 5: Turn on Auto-Tag Future Interactions (optional)

Automatic tagging saves you repetitive work by adding your chosen tags when more contacts interact with the campaign. Turn this on if you want to keep tagging contacts based on the selected interaction category.

  1. Open the interaction category where you want to set up automatic tagging.

  2. Choose All.

  3. Click Add Tags.

  4. Enter or select the tags to apply.

  5. Turn on the Auto-Tag Future Interactions toggle.

  6. Finish the tagging action using the controls on screen.

ZipLeads will automatically add the tags to contacts who later meet the selected interaction condition.

Step 6: Check the tagging results

Checking tags helps confirm the right contacts got the right tags before you use them for more marketing.

  1. Go to Contacts.

  2. Open a contact who was included in the tagging action.

  3. Review the contact's tags.

  4. For manual bulk tagging, review the Bulk Actions records where available.

For automatic tagging, check the contact record after a new qualifying interaction happens.
