A countdown timer counts down to a set deadline on screen. It creates urgency, so people act before time runs out.

Benefits of countdown timers

  • Creates Urgency

  • Increases Conversions

  • Promotes Exclusivity

  • Enhances Engagement

When should you add a timer?

Countdown timers are very versatile and work well in many types of emails:

  1. Retail: Show the time left on special promotions or highlight delivery deadlines, such as "Two hours left for next-day delivery."

  2. Fashion: Build anticipation for new collections, events or fashion shows.

  3. Travel: Show the time remaining before departure.

  4. Media: Remind subscribers how long they have before their subscription expires.

  5. Events: Count down to an event or the end of ticket pre-sales.

  6. Non-profits: Create urgency for donation matching opportunities.

  7. Transactional Emails: Build excitement for upcoming events

Types of countdown timers

  1. Fixed Timer

    • Description: Counts down to a set date and time. Ideal for events like Black Friday sales or product launches.

    • Usage: "Black Friday Sale ends in 2 days!"

  2. Recurring Timer

    • Description: Resets after reaching zero. Useful for ongoing promotions.

    • Usage: "Weekly classes countdown" (resets each week for the next class).

  3. Dynamic Timer

    • Description: Personalised for each person based on their actions, such as opening an email.

    • Usage: "Your special offer expires in 1 hour" (based on the person's behaviour).

Key considerations

  1. Design and Style: Make sure the timer matches your brand's look and feel.

  2. Placement: Put the timer somewhere prominent, such as the top of an email or landing page.

  3. Redirections: Set up working links for both the active and expired states.

  4. Consistency: Keep timers consistent across your emails and websites so they feel genuine.

  5. Expiry Image: Use an image or message to let people know when the timer has ended.

Countdown timer dynamic links

  • Active Timer Link: Sends people to the page where they can take up the active offer, such as the offer or checkout page. It's best to use the same countdown timer on this page. That way, when the timer expires, people are automatically redirected to the expired page.

  • Expired Timer Link: Sends people to a page that shows the timer has run out. In emails, people will see an expiry image that links to the expired page. In funnels, the expired page displays automatically once the timer ends.

Tip: Make sure you add both links before saving, so the dynamic links work.
