Quiz scoring and categories turn quiz answers into useful outcomes. These include assessments, recommendations, audience segments and personality-style results.

You give answer options point values and categories. Then you use score tiers, category results and dynamic content to show each quiz taker a personalised Result Page based on their answers.

How to Add Scores in Quizzes

Step 1: Create or Edit a Quiz

  1. Log in to your account.

  2. Go to Sites > Quizzes.

  3. Select an existing quiz, or click + New Quiz to create a new one.

Step 2: Add Questions to the Quiz

  1. Click Add Question and choose a question type (Single Choice, Multiple Choice, Dropdown and so on).

  2. Enter the question and its possible answers.

  3. Give each answer a score value, based on how much weight it carries.

Step 3: Assign Scores to Categories

  1. Create score categories (for example, Category A, Category B and so on).

Note: When you create or edit a category, a popover in the product explains how categories work. It covers setup, assigning options and showing category scores on the result page. Use it as a quick guide while you build.

  2. Assign scores to each answer:

    1. For Single Choice/Dropdown questions, give each answer a fixed score.

    2. For Multiple Choice/Multi Dropdown questions, give each option a score. The scores add up if more than one option is selected.

  3. Assign each answer's score to the relevant category.

Step 4: Save and Preview

  1. Click Save Quiz once you've set up all your questions and scoring.

  2. Use the Preview option to test the quiz and check the scores are calculated correctly.

How Quiz Scoring Works

Quiz scoring turns selected answers into measurable results. These can be shown as an overall score, category score, score tier or category-based outcome. Knowing how each score is calculated helps you assign points consistently and build accurate Result Pages.

Overall Score

The Overall Score is the quiz taker's total performance across all scored answers. ZipLeads can show the overall result on the Result Page as a percentage, the actual score, or a score out of 10.

Category Score

Category scores measure performance within each category. When an answer adds points to a category, those points count towards that category's result.

Each category is calculated on its own. This lets you compare results across different topics, skills, personas or recommendation groups.

Percentage Score

Percentage results are calculated against the maximum possible score for the overall score or the category.

Score Percentage = (Selected Score ÷ Maximum Possible Score) × 100

You can then map these percentages to Result Page score tiers, such as Low, Medium and High.

Step 1: Set the Maximum Score for Each Question

Every question has a maximum score. This depends on the question type:

  • Single Choice/Dropdown: Only one answer can be selected, so the maximum score is fixed.

  • Multiple Choice/Multi Dropdown: More than one answer can be selected, so the maximum score is higher. It's fixed, and it's the sum of all the options in the question.

Example:

  • A Single Choice question might have a maximum score of 10.

  • A Multiple Choice question might allow up to 50 points.

Step 2: Assign Scores to Answers

When a quiz taker selects an answer, it counts towards one of the following:

  • Overall Score Only: Counts towards the total quiz score, but not any category.

  • Category-Specific Score: Counts towards a specific category and the overall score.

  • Multiple Categories: Counts towards more than one category at the same time.

Example:

  • If a quiz has Category A, B and C, and an answer is assigned to Category A, the score counts towards Category A and the Overall Score.

Step 3: Calculating the Final Score

Once all answers are selected, the final score is calculated with this formula:

Final Score = (Selected Score / Max Score) × 100

This is worked out separately for Overall Only and for each category.

Example Calculation

Category

Selected Score

Max Score

Final %

Final Score Formula

Overall

90

130

69.23%

Selected Score for Overall / Maximum Possible Score for Overall

Category A

20

50

40.00%

Selected Score for Category A / Maximum Possible Score for Category A

Category B

20

50

40.00%

Selected Score for Category B / Maximum Possible Score for Category B

Category C

10

50

20.00%

Selected Score for Category C / Maximum Possible Score for Category C

In this example:

  • The quiz taker scored 69.23% overall.

  • For Category A, they scored 20 out of 50, which is 40%.

Key Takeaways About "Overall Only"

  1. "Overall Only" is a consolidated score

    • If an answer is assigned only to "Overall Only", it doesn't count towards any category.

    • If an answer is assigned to both a category and "Overall Only", it counts towards both.

  2. Categories are independent but add to the Overall Score

    • Each category's score is calculated separately, but the Overall Score is the sum of all category scores.

  3. Formula breakdown

    • The Final Score Formula is calculated as:
Maximum Selected Score for X / Maximum possible score in each category

    • This applies to Overall, Category A, Category B and so on, to work out the percentage scores.

Add Dynamic Result Messages by Score Ranges

You can show different messages depending on a quiz taker's score percentage.

Steps

  1. Go to the Result Page in the quiz builder.

  2. Set your score ranges (for example, Low: 0–40%, Medium: 41–70%, High: 71–100%).

  3. Add a custom message for each range.

  4. If you like, add a CTA (subscribe, book a call, redirect to a funnel and so on).

Examples

  • Low: "There's room for improvement. Let's explore how we can help."

  • Medium: "You're on the right track. Here's how to optimise further."

  • High: "Awesome job! You nailed this. Let's talk about next steps."

Best Practices

  • Double-check category assignments if totals don't add up.

  • Remember: Overall Only answers don't affect categories.

  • Always preview to confirm your scoring is accurate.

Personalise Results for Individual Categories

Category-specific results let each quiz outcome show content that matches the quiz taker's strongest or weakest category. Instead of showing everyone the same explanation, you can tailor the recommendation, media and next step to the category picked by the quiz scoring.

In an Individual Category section, you can customise content for each category, including:

  • Headline and explanatory text

  • Images

  • Videos

  • Links

  • CTA buttons

  • Category-specific recommendations

You can set the Individual Category section to show either the highest-scoring or lowest-scoring category.

You can also use the first category as a starting template for your category-specific result content. This saves repeating the same setup before you customise each category.

Build the Result Page from Scratch

You can add or remove sections and fully customise them.

Sections available

  • Header

  • Overall Score

  • Category Score

  • Individual Category

  • Media Options → Switch between image or video.

    • If video: paste a video link and choose the placement (top, bottom, left, right, fixed).

    • Note: Images and videos in templates can't be replaced. You can only turn them on or off and position them.

  • CTA Button → Add button text, a link and a style (colour, alignment).

  • Spacing & Background → Adjust margins, padding and background colour.

Example: "Your score shows you are Marketing Strategy with a score of 80%" with a right-aligned video and a CTA button labelled "Subscribe".

Call to Action

Encourages quiz takers to take the next step.

What you can do:

  • Add context text above the button.

  • Customise the button label (for example, "Book a Call" or "Download Report").

  • Link the button to funnels, booking calendars or external resources.

  • Style the button (colour, text colour, alignment).

  • Adjust spacing and background colour.

  • Use dynamic content options to show different CTAs or supporting text for specific score tiers (for example, stronger offers for high scores).

Example: "Want to talk about your results? Book a 15-min call" with a branded button.

Footer

Closes out the result page.

What you can do:

  • Add footer text (for example, a disclaimer or copyright).

  • Upload a small logo.

  • Insert links (privacy policy, terms, social).

  • Style with spacing and background colour.

Show the Highest or Lowest Scoring Category

Highest and lowest category results turn category scores into a single personalised outcome. This is handy for personality quizzes, recommendation quizzes, readiness assessments, and quizzes that find a contact's strongest area or biggest opportunity to improve.

On the Result Page:

  1. Click + Add Section.

  2. Select Individual Category.

  3. Choose whether to show the:

    • Highest Category — shows the category with the highest score.

    • Lowest Category — shows the category with the lowest score.

  4. Customise the text and content shown for the result.

  5. Save and preview the quiz to check the expected category appears.

You can also use Quiz Tags inside the Individual Category content, including:

  • {{quiz_tags.highest_category_name}}

  • {{quiz_tags.highest_category_score}}

  • {{quiz_tags.lowest_category_name}}

  • {{quiz_tags.lowest_category_score}}
