CEU Eligibility, Renewal Cycles, and Carryover Rules

Written by Andrew McLaughlin

Overview

CEU eligibility is determined by certification requirements, CEU category restrictions, and the completion date of the educational activity.

Understanding renewal cycle rules helps ensure CEUs are applied correctly and counted toward certification maintenance requirements.

CEU Completion Dates

CEUs are applied according to the date the activity was completed.

If the completion date falls outside the active renewal cycle, the CEU may not be eligible for the current tracker period.

Do Unused CEUs Roll Over?

No.

Unused CEUs do not automatically roll over to a future renewal cycle.

Once a renewal cycle has been completed and submitted, unused CEUs from that cycle cannot be reused.

What Happens If I Earn CEUs After Completing My Requirements?

CEUs earned after completing your current renewal cycle requirements may be eligible for your next renewal cycle if they meet AAPC eligibility requirements.

Eligibility is based on:

  • The CEU completion date

  • The applicable renewal cycle

  • Credential-specific requirements

CEUs and Renewal Cycles

To receive credit toward a renewal cycle:

  • The CEU must be completed during an eligible timeframe.

  • The CEU must meet credential requirements.

  • The CEU must be entered correctly in the CEU Tracker.

CEUs entered into the wrong renewal period may not count toward certification renewal.

Credential-Specific Eligibility Rules

Certain CEUs may only be applied to specific certifications.

Examples include:

  • CMS-sponsored training CEUs

  • Compliance-focused CEUs with category restrictions

  • Credential-specific course CEUs

  • Specialty certification activities approved for only certain credentials

Always review credential requirements before earning or submitting CEUs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse CEUs from a previous renewal cycle?

No. CEUs applied to a completed renewal cycle cannot be reused.

Can CEUs count toward my next renewal cycle?

Possibly. CEUs earned after completing your current cycle requirements may be eligible for your next renewal cycle if they meet all applicable requirements.

Why is my CEU not eligible for my certification?

Some CEUs are restricted by certification type, category requirements, or approval criteria and cannot be applied to every credential.
