My CEU Certificate Does Not Have an Index Number

Written by Andrew McLaughlin

Overview

Not every CEU certificate includes an AAPC CEU index number.

The absence of an index number does not automatically mean the CEU is invalid.

The next step is determining whether the education qualifies through another accepted approval path.

What Is an AAPC Index Number?

An AAPC index number is assigned to educational activities that have been reviewed and approved through the AAPC CEU Vendor Program.

The index number confirms:

  • The education was reviewed

  • The CEU value was approved

  • The activity can be identified during CEU submission

What Should I Do If My Certificate Does Not Have an Index Number?

Start by determining whether the activity qualifies under an accepted CEU category.

Examples may include:

  • CMS-sponsored education

  • AHIMA-sponsored education

  • CME or AMA PRA Category 1 activities

  • Qualified college coursework

These activities may be accepted even if a traditional index number is not present.

Should I Contact the Event Organizer?

Yes.

If the education was expected to be AAPC-approved, ask the organizer:

  • Whether AAPC approval was obtained

  • Whether an index number exists

  • Whether an updated certificate is available

Approved vendors typically receive approval details and the index number when an activity is approved.

What If the Education Was Not Approved?

If the education does not have an index number and does not qualify under an accepted exception category, it may not qualify for AAPC CEU credit.

Frequently Asked Questions
