Continuing Teaching Units (CTUs) for PMCC Approved Instructors

Written by Andrew McLaughlin

What Are Continuing Teaching Units (CTUs)?

Continuing Teaching Units (CTUs) are used to maintain your PMCC Approved Instructor status.

To maintain approved instructor status, you must earn 8 CTUs each calendar year. One CTU is earned for each hour of approved learning activity completed.

What Counts Toward CTUs?

CTUs focus on improving teaching, presentation, communication, mentoring, and instructional skills.

Examples of approved CTU activities include:

  • Adult learning courses

  • Speaking skills training

  • PowerPoint training

  • Mentoring programs

  • Coaching programs

  • Communication skills courses

  • Public speaking programs such as Toastmasters

  • Online courses for teachers, presenters, or speakers

  • Presentation skills training

  • AAPC-sponsored workshops and audio conferences

  • PMCC Instructor Networking

  • Teach the Teacher programs

  • Company in-service meetings

  • AMA Annual Meeting participation

What Does NOT Count?

Teaching classes does not qualify for CTUs.

CTUs are intended to improve instructional skills, not to award credit for teaching activities already performed.

Are CTUs the Same as CEUs?

No.

CTUs and CEUs are separate requirements.

An activity submitted for CEU credit may not also be submitted for CTU credit.

When Must CTUs Be Completed?

  • CTUs must be earned during the current calendar year.

  • CTUs must be submitted no later than December 31.

  • A total of 8 CTUs are required annually.

Need Additional Help?

If you're uncertain whether an activity qualifies for CTU credit, contact AAPC Support before completing the activity to avoid delays in renewal.
