Prepare Google Merchant Center for your store

Learn how to set up Google Merchant Center, manage your product data, and increase your visibility to customers on Google Shopping.

Prepare your business, website, and shipping terms in Merchant Center so that Google can process your store's product information.

Before you begin

Google Merchant Center is Google's service for product information, free product listings, and the basis for Shopping ads. Having an account or an uploaded product file does not mean that all products will be approved or displayed.

You need a Google account with the correct permissions, your store's correct HTTPS address, and accurate business, shipping, and return information. Abicart's product feed is available in all subscriptions. Merchant Center is free to use; advertising in Google Ads has a separate budget and separate terms.

First, check if your company already has a Merchant Center account. Do not create an extra account to resolve missing permissions or a website claim that already belongs to another account.

1. Choose the right Google account and business

Open Google Merchant Center and sign in with your company's designated Google account. If you don't have a Google account, you can create one. Read the terms and conditions before you accept them.

The images show examples of a previous interface. Use the corresponding setting in your current account; icons and menu names may have changed.

Check the account ID and business name. If someone else administers the account, that person must give you the correct access. A private login or a login that works in Google Ads does not automatically grant the correct permissions here.

2. Enter business and website information

Fill in the business information requested by Merchant Center, such as business name, address, country, and contact details. Select the correct time zone for scheduling and reporting. The business address country is not the same setting as all the markets where the products will be sold.

Enter your store's full, public HTTPS address. Check for the correct hostname, for example, with or without www, and the correct domain if you have sub-stores. The customer must be able to see products, prices, terms, and how to complete the purchase.

3. Verify and claim your website

Verification shows that you have the right to make changes to the website. Claiming links the website to the correct Merchant Center account. Completing one step does not replace the other.

Choose a verification method that Google offers for your specific account. Google may offer an HTML tag, an HTML file, or an authorized installation of Analytics/Tag Manager. Only choose a method that you can actually implement and for which you meet the permission requirements.

For an HTML tag in the Abicart theme: open Appearance → Themes → edit the active theme → Add-ons → Google → Google Search Console. In the dedicated verification field, enter only the value in the tag's content, not the entire meta tag or the name of an HTML file. This menu path applies to themes with this field. TPL and other theme variants require their own verification instructions.

If the field already has another verification code, do not overwrite it without checking which account is using it. Instead, use another method offered by Google or your theme's intended support for extra meta tags. Verify that the new tag is present on the public page that Google will read.

Go back to Merchant Center and complete the verification and claim. A fixed waiting time of 12 hours is not guaranteed. If the claim belongs to another account, the account owner or Google will need to help you manage access; repeatedly registering new accounts will not resolve the ownership. Follow Google's verification instructions for your current interface.

4. Set up shipping and returns

Open Merchant Center's settings for shipping and returns. Enter the countries, costs, delivery times, and return policies that actually apply in the store. The values must match what the customer encounters at checkout and the terms and conditions on the website.

A shipping detail in a product file does not replace all account or return settings. Pay special attention to free shipping thresholds, different countries, and products with special delivery terms. If necessary, follow Google's instructions for shipping settings.

5. Connect product data and understand error types

Once the account is set up, you can connect Abicart's product feed to Merchant Center. Select the correct language, currency, and country of sale and check the initial fetch.

  • Account issues: for example, website claims or policy reviews. Resolve them at the account level.

  • Fetch issues: Google cannot read the file. Check the file address and source.

  • Product issues: for example, price, identifiers, image, or availability. Read the errors for the affected product and correct the corresponding information in the store.

If you want to advertise, you should also link the correct Google Ads account. Free listings do not require you to start a paid campaign. Do not enable advertising as a troubleshooting test for product data.

Quick start

  1. Select the company's existing Merchant Center account and the correct permission level.

  2. Check the business information and the public HTTPS address.

  3. Verify and claim the website in the correct account.

  4. Check shipping/returns and then connect the correct product feed.

Subscription: Abicart's product feed is included in all subscriptions. Google's account, product approval, listings, and any advertising costs are handled separately by Google.
