Changing SKU Values on Marketplace Listings

Changing the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) value on marketplace listings requires extreme caution. SKUs serve as unique identifiers for products across marketplaces and internal systems. Modifying an SKU after sales have already occurred can lead to order fulfillment issues, inventory mismatches, and reporting discrepancies.

⚠️ Important Advisory

Acenda strongly advises against changing SKU values on live marketplace listings. This action can have serious consequences, including disrupted order processing, inventory misalignment, and loss of sales history. Clients who choose to proceed do so at their own risk and should take all necessary precautions.

Recommended Approach: Use SKU Aliases in Acenda

If sales have already been made using the existing SKU, we strongly recommend keeping the SKU value unchanged on the marketplace. Instead, you can assign an SKU Alias in the Acenda Admin. This allows internal systems to reference the new SKU while maintaining consistency on the marketplace, preventing disruptions to order processing and historical data.

If You Still Want to Change the SKU

If changing the SKU value is still necessary, follow these steps to minimize risks:

1. Create a Support Ticket with the Marketplace

• Before making any changes, open a ticket with the respective marketplace (e.g., Target+, Walmart, Amazon, etc.).

• Discuss potential implications, including inventory sync, order tracking, and reporting continuity.

• Some marketplaces may have specific policies or restrictions on SKU changes.

2. Ensure Inventory and Orders Are in Sync

• Double-check that no active or pending orders are associated with the old SKU before making changes.

• Update your internal inventory system accordingly to prevent overselling or stock mismatches.

3. Implement the Change in a Controlled Manner

• If the marketplace allows SKU updates, follow their process precisely.

• Monitor inventory and orders closely for discrepancies in the following days.

4. Test and Validate

• Verify that orders placed under the new SKU are being processed correctly.

• Check that reports and data tracking remain accurate.

5. Update All Connected Systems

• Ensure that all linked systems (e.g., ERP, WMS, shipping providers) recognize the new SKU.

• Notify relevant teams about the change to prevent confusion.

Final Recommendation

Acenda does not support or recommend changing SKU values on marketplace listings unless absolutely necessary. If the goal is internal SKU standardization, using SKU Aliases within Acenda is the safest and most efficient approach. Clients who choose to proceed with an SKU change must do so at their own risk and should first consult the respective marketplace’s support team.
