What does it mean to be placed in a specific Casper quartile?

Updated this week

Casper scores are grouped into four quartiles, which represent how your performance compares to other applicants on the same test type and are determined by how strong your response is relative to others who answered the same scenario. If you are placed in the first quartile, it means other applicants had stronger responses.

This does not mean you failed, it simply reflects that, compared to the rest of the test-takers, your responses were rated as less strong. Keep in mind that the Casper pool includes many high-caliber applicants.

Why Some Applicants Score Higher

Applicants who are placed in a higher quartile may demonstrate certain competencies Casper is designed to measure. These may include:

  • Effort: they may have tried harder to respond to questions (for instance, they may have explained their position fully, or used the full amount of time before moving on to the next question, compared to applicants who place in the first quartile).

  • Empathy: they considered all perspectives in a meaningful way.

  • Equity: they showed strong respect for others’ experiences and needs.

  • Communication: they demonstrated above-average ability to effectively articulate their ideas.

  • Familiarity with the format: they familiarized themselves with the format of the test (video, typed response, etc.) and were able to successfully navigate these aspects of the test.

What Your Quartile Placement Means for You

Regardless of which quartile you place in, it should not dissuade you from applying to any program. Most programs consider all quartiles and use Casper as one data point among many when reviewing applicants.
