How to Create Custom Dimensions in Google Analytics to Track A/B Tests

When running A/B tests with AdUp, we need to track experiment data inside Google Analytics. To do this, you must create two custom dimensions:

  • AdUp Session ID (User scope)

  • AdUp Variant ID (Event scope)


Step 1: Sign in to Google Analytics

  1. Log in with the Google account that has Editor access to the property where you want to add the custom dimensions.


Step 2: Open the Admin Settings

  1. In the bottom-left corner, click the Admin ⚙️ icon.

  2. Make sure you’ve selected the correct Account and Property where your experiment data should be tracked.


Step 3: Navigate to Custom Definitions

  1. In the Data display column, click Custom definitions.

  2. Select Custom dimensions from the list.


Step 4: Create “AdUp Session ID” (User Scope)

  1. Click Create custom dimension.

  2. Enter the following details:

    • Name: AdUp Session ID

    • Event parameter (Type exactly like this): adup_session_id

    • Scope: Select User

    • Description (optional):

  3. Click Save.


Step 5: Create “AdUp Variant ID” (Event Scope)

  1. From the Custom dimensions list, click Create custom dimension again.

  2. Enter the following details:

    • Name: AdUp Variant ID

    • Event parameter (Type exactly like this):adup_variant_id

    • Scope: Select Event

    • Description (optional):

  3. Click Save.


Step 6: Verify the Custom Dimensions

  1. After saving, you’ll see both dimensions listed.
