How to set up Lufft WS Series Weather Station sensors

Below are step-by-step instructions for setting up your Lufft Weather Station. For instructions on setting up your Thiamis, see Setting Up Your Thiamis. For general sensor setup and configuration, see How to Add & Configure Sensors in Environet.

Note: The images in this article show an older Thiamis, but the setup is the same for modern Thiamis devices. The only difference is that all USB-A ports have been replaced with USB-C ports on the modern devices.

Setup Instructions:

  1. Connect power to the Thiamis. There are two options:

    • Connect a 12V power supply to the 3-pole Euroblock connector

    • Connect a 5V power supply to either of the USB ports

  2. Plug the 8 pole connection cable into the Lufft's DIN port.

  3. Plug the other end of the cable into the RS-485 port on the Thiamis, using a 3-pole Euroblock connector.

Note: When using a splitter cable, note which sensor is connected to each letter port for configuring in Environet when Adding Sensors

Errors

If the Lufft is not reporting, check the Thiamis configuration page for any listed Errors. Errors can be found in Sensor Configuration section of the Thiamis Configuration Page, and will be highlighted in RED.

Timeout Error

The Lufft has not responded to the requests made by the Thiamis and has timed out. It will continue to attempt request but you can run through the general Troubleshooting Sensors steps to address common problems.

Tips on Specific Models:

WS401/WS601

WS401/WS601 models feature more accurate built-in rain gauges compared to the rain radar used in the WS400/WS600.

External Rain Gauge WTB100

If you are using the rain gauge, ensure it is physically connected and use the UMB Config tool on a PC to confirm that the 600’s precipitation channels are available (screenshot below). See Lufft’s video instructions for guidance. Note that the external temperature sensor and external rain gauge share the same input, so only one can be connected at a time.

Model Specific Sensors

The WS family is a range of low cost smart combination of weather sensors for the acquisition of a variety of measurement variables, as used for example for environmental data logging in road traffic management systems. Depending on the model, each device has a different combination of sensors for the various measurement variables. Below is a list of the sensors included in each device.

  • WS100-UMB: Precipitation

  • WS200-UMB: Wind direction, wind speed, compass, temperature (ext), rain gauge (ext)

  • WS300-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, temperature (ext), rain gauge (ext), power save 2

  • WS301-UMB, WS302-UMB, WS303-UMB, WS304-UMB, WS310-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, global radiation, temperature (ext), rain gauge (ext), power save 2

  • WS400-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, precipitation, temperature (ext)

  • WS401-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, precipitation (uses a rain gauge for precipitation measurement), temperature (ext), power save 2

  • WS500-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind direction, wind speed, compass, temperature (ext), rain gauge (ext), power save 2

  • WS501-UMB, WS502-UMB, WS503-UMB, WS504-UMB, WS510-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind direction, wind speed, compass, global radiation, temperature (ext), rain gauge (ext), power save 2

  • WS600-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, precipitation (uses a rain gauge for precipitation measurement), wind direction, wind speed, compass, temperature (ext)

  • WS700-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, precipitation, wind direction, wind speed, compass, global radiation, temperature (ext)

  • WS800-UMB: Air temperature, humidity, air pressure, precipitation, wind direction, wind speed, compass, global radiation, lightning sensor, temperature (ext)

Sensors marked (ext) in the list above are additional accessories and not included with the device. The list shows which external sensors can be connected to the different models.

Note: The external temperature sensor and the external rain gauge use the same input, so only one of them can be connected simultaneously.
