InSitu TROLL Series

How to set up TROLL sensors

Below are step-by-step instructions for setting up your TROLL series sensor. For instructions on setting up your Thiamis, see Setting Up Your Thiamis. For general sensor setup and configuration, see How to Add & Configure Sensors in Environet.

Note: The images in this article show an older Thiamis, but the setup is the same for modern Thiamis devices. The only difference is that all USB-A ports have been replaced with USB-C ports on the modern devices.

Setup Instructions:

  1. Connect power to the Thiamis, there are three options:

    • Connect a 12V power supply to the 3 pole Euroblock connector

    • Connect a 5V power supply to either of the USB ports

    • When using an Aethair Node Enclosure, connect to the Node's power port

  2. Connect the TROLL Com Adapter to the Thiamis, there are two options:

    1. RS-232: Plug the RS-232 splitter cable into the Thiamis RS-232 port and connect RS-232 TROLL Com adapter (PN 0056140) to Port A

    2. USB: Plug the USB TROLL Com adapter (PN 0052500) into the Thiamis USB Port.

  3. Connect the TROLL Com Adapter to the TROLL sensor, there are two options:

    • Connect the TROLL Com Adapter to TROLL cable that is connected to the sensor. (In both example images below, the cable is used)

    • Connect the TROLL Com Adapter directly to the sensor.

Note: When using a splitter cable, note which sensor is connected to each letter port for configuring in Environet when Adding Sensors.

Selecting a TROLL Com Communication Device

(this information was obtained through the official In-Situ TROLL operation manual)

The subsequent figure shows the function and connection features of the TROLL Com Communication Device models.

  • A Direct-Connect TROLL Com might be preferred for programming an instrument that will be deployed on a suspension cable.

  • A RuggedCable System and a Cable-Connect TROLL Com are required if you intend to communicate with the instrument while it is deployed. However, you can program the instrument with any TROLL Com.

  • A Wireless TROLL Com will allow you to connect to the VuSitu mobile app, which you can use to configure and deploy your instrument.

TROLL AC Adapter

The AC adapter for the TROLL sensor provides 24 VDC, 0.75 A, AC input 100-250 V and includes a North American power cord. The TROLL Com Communication Device includes an external power input port for connection to the AC adapter.

Description: AC Adapter 24 VDC

Part Number: 0052440

IMPORTANT: Use only In-Situ Inc.'s AC adapter. Damage to the instrument caused by the use of third-party converters is not covered by the warranty.

Wiring

Refer to the diagrams below for wiring information. Make sure that you trim and insulate unused wires. The shield must be wired to a chassis ground or earth ground.

Errors

If the TROLL Sensor is not reporting, check the Thiamis configuration page for any listed Errors. Errors can be found in Sensor Configuration section of the Thiamis Configuration Page, and will be highlighted in RED.

Timeout Error

The TROLL sensor has not responded to the requests made by the Thiamis and has timed out. It will continue to attempt communication but you can run through the general Troubleshooting Sensors steps to address common problems.
