Before completing a Spirometry or Pre-Employment Functional Assessment, an applicant's blood pressure and heart rate need to be measured.

Our protocol is to cease the Spirometry Assessment or Lifting/Carrying and Step Test when an applicant presents with:

  • a confirmed resting Blood Pressure of

    • ≥ 160mmHg (<180) systolic, or

    • ≥ 100mmHg diastolic (<110)

  • or a resting heart rate above 100bpm,

In the event of this situation, you also need to inform KINNECT as soon as possible.

What happens next?

We require the applicant to gain medical clearance before proceeding with their appointment. Once you inform us, KINNECT will then provide these observations to the examinee to discuss with their doctor.

For an applicant to proceed with the ceased assessments, they are required to return written advice from their doctor, including:

  • A management plan consistent with the National Heart Foundation Guideline; AND

  • A cardiac risk score of less than 10% of the 5-year risk, AND

  • A blood pressure record below 160 Systolic AND 100 diastolic (actual values).

Once these reports have been returned to KINNECT, we will then contact you to reschedule the appointment.

Notifications within Carelever Forms

KINNECT has designed Carelever Forms to automatically notify the assessor when an assessment needs to be ceased by flagging any Blood Pressure or Heart Rate readings above the cut-off values mentioned above.

However, in a case where the Blood Pressure or Heart Rate readings are considered elevated but remain under the Medical Clearance cut-off values listed above, it is at the assessor's discretion whether to continue with the assessment based on their clinical judgement.
