Mirror can be used anywhere your healthcare happens. It’s designed to help you remember what was discussed in any medical consultation, whether for yourself, a loved one, or someone you care for. Here are a few things you can do to get the most from the app.
Talk to your clinician
We recommend telling your clinician you are using Mirror. You could say, “This is my medical note-taker. It helps me remember what you tell me.” Most clinicians understand how difficult it is to remember medical information and are happy for you to use tools like Mirror.
If your clinician raises concerns or objects to your use of Mirror
It is within your legal right in the UK to use tools like Mirror to record medical consultations. In fact, both the NHS and the British Medical Association encourage patients to do so.
If your clinician doesn’t want you to use Mirror, you can show them the ‘Information for your clinician’ page in the app. This contains specifics on information governance that should help put them at ease.
Getting the best outcome
When your consultation begins, place your phone screen-up somewhere between you and your clinician, ideally on a hard surface like a table or the arm of a chair.
Speak clearly, but naturally.
Once you tap ‘finish’, Mirror will ask you how many people were in the consultation, and whether you were the patient or not. This helps with the accuracy of the summary.
