I’m hearing very controversial opinions about obtaining patents. Could you please share with me what do you think about this?

For software companies, I would say most VC's don't view patents as a sustainable advantage. They are at best roadblocks. The exception here is if you have truly deep and new IP -- e.g. a fundamentally new algorithm or real advantage. This is different for hardware or deep tech, where patents may be viewed as a more primary source of advantage.

Patents aren't bad -- they are just expensive. If you do want to pursue patents, you can get a provisional patent for $3K or so that gives you a hold on the claim for 1-2 years and file a full patent after you have received funding.
