What can be assigned to learners in the LMS and what are the differences?

Managers can assign different types of learning content to individual learners or to entire groups (depending on your LMS plan). These assignments help structure training based on organisational needs and learning goals.

The main types of assignments available in the LMS include courses, learning paths, psychometric assessments, and additional internal materials.

Course

A course is a standalone learning unit assigned to learners individually or as part of a group.

Alison courses are available in two formats:

  • Certificate Courses – typically under 3 hours, focused on specific skills or topics

  • Diploma Courses – typically 6–15 hours, covering broader subject areas with deeper learning content

All courses follow a structured format:

Course → Module → Topic → Assessment

  • Certificate courses usually include one final assessment

  • Diploma courses include multiple assessments throughout the course

  • Assessments may include multiple-choice or single-choice questions

  • Learners must achieve at least 80% to pass

  • Learners can retake assessments as many times as needed

Learning Path

A Learning Path is a structured collection of courses grouped around a specific topic or skill area.

It may include a combination of certificate and diploma courses.

To complete a learning path, learners must:

  • Complete all included courses

  • Pass each course with a minimum score of 80% in the assessment

Learning paths can be pre-created or configured by your LMS Super Admin or Admin (depending on permissions). Group Managers may assign existing learning paths but cannot edit or create them.

Psychometrics

Psychometric assessments are structured evaluation tools used to measure skills, aptitude, personality traits, or language proficiency.

These may include:

  • Aptitude tests

  • Workplace personality assessments

  • English proficiency tests

Note: Psychometric assessments are available only on selected LMS+ plans and may be subject to usage limits depending on your subscription.

Additional Assignments

Additional Assignments refer to internal training materials uploaded to the LMS by your Super Admin or Admin.

These may include custom content such as:

  • Company-specific training materials

  • Uploaded documents, presentations, or videos

If Group Manager require specific internal materials, they must first be uploaded by an authorised admin user before they can be assigned. Once available, these materials can be assigned directly from the Group Page.

Each assignment type supports different training needs, from individual skill development to structured organisational learning programs.
