Learning Assignments: How to Assign, Edit and Remove

Before assigning learning, it's important to understand the difference between self-enrolled learning and assigned learning.

  • Self-enrolled learning is any course a learner chooses independently from the Alison course catalogue.

  • Assigned learning is learning that has been assigned by a manager through the LMS.

Self-enrolled learning does not count towards any assignment targets or due dates you set. You can view this activity in the Self-Enrolments Reports.

Assigned learning appears in the learner's Assigned Learning section, can include a completion deadline, and is tracked in assignment reports.

You can assign:

  • Courses

  • Learning Paths

  • Psychometric Assessments

  • Additional Assignments (Content Library)

To learn more about each assignment type, refer to that article.

How to assign learning or psychometric assessments

There are several ways to assign learning, depending on whether you're assigning it to an individual learner, multiple learners, or an entire group.

Assign learning to a single learner

The easiest way to assign learning to one learner is from either:

  • Manage Teams → Team Members, or

  • the learner's individual profile.

Super Admins and Admins (with the appropriate permissions) can assign learning from the Manage Teams page.

Group Managers can assign learning only to their own groups.

To assign learning from Manage Teams page:

  1. Locate the learner (you can use the search or filters).

  2. Click the three-dot menu beside their name.

  3. Select the type of learning you want to assign.

To assign learning from the learner profile:

  1. Open the learner's profile.

  2. Select All Actions.

  3. Choose the type of assignment you want to make.

Assign learning to multiple learners

If you want to assign the same learning to several learners who belong to different groups (or no group at all), you can assign directly from the relevant LMS section.

This option is available to Super Admins and Admins with the appropriate permissions.

Navigate to the relevant page from the left-hand menu:

For Courses and Psychometric Assessments:

  1. Open the relevant page.

  2. Click Assign.

  3. Select the course or assessment.

  4. Choose the learners.

  5. Complete the assignment.

For Learning Paths, the Learning Path must already exist in your LMS. If you haven't created one yet, refer to the Learning Paths article.

Assign it by clicking Assign → Assign Learning Path

Similarly, content from the Content Library can be assigned directly by selecting the Assign icon beside the required file.

Assign learning to a group (LMS+)

With LMS+, you can assign learning to an entire group instead of assigning learners individually.

Open the required Group, then select All Actions and choose what you'd like to assign.

Once learning has been assigned, learners receive an email notification and can access their assignments from the Assigned Learning section of their dashboard.

Invited learners must activate their LMS account before they can access assigned learning.

How to extend an assignment deadline

When assigning a course or Learning Path, you can set a completion deadline.

Learners receive reminder notifications as the deadline approaches, and overdue assignments are highlighted in reports.

Deadlines can be updated after assignment. Currently, deadlines can only be edited for individual learners.

Open the learner's profile, locate the assignment, then select the Edit Schedule icon.

How to unassign learning

Learning can generally be unassigned until it has been completed or a certificate has been assigned.

Completed assignments cannot normally be removed because this preserves historical learning records.

When learning is unassigned:

  • Not started – the assignment is removed completely.

  • Started but not completed – the assignment disappears from the learner's dashboard, but existing progress remains in reports and learner records.

  • Completed – cannot normally be unassigned.

If learning is removed from one group but remains assigned through another group:

  • learners who belong to both groups continue to see the assignment;

  • learners who belonged only to the removed group retain their course progress, but it is reported as Self-Enrolled Learning rather than assigned learning.

Unassign learning from an individual learner

Assignments made directly to an individual learner can be removed from the learner profile.

Simply select Unassign beside the assignment.

Learning assigned through a group cannot be removed from an individual learner. It must be unassigned from the group instead.

Unassign learning from a group (LMS+)

To remove learning assigned to an entire group:

  1. Open the group.

  2. Locate the assignment.

  3. Click Unassign.

The assignment will be removed for every learner in that group.

Common assignment questions

A learner cannot see their assignments

The learner has most likely not activated their LMS account yet.

Check their status in Manage Teams.

If their status is Invited, resend the invitation or ask the learner to complete the registration using the link in their invitation email.

Assignments become visible once the account has been activated.

A learner doesn't appear when assigning learning

If you cannot find a learner during the assignment process, they may already have that learning assigned.

Open the learner's profile to confirm their current assignments

A learner was removed from a group, but their assignments are still visible

This is expected behaviour.

When a learner is removed from a group, any group-assigned learning becomes an individual assignment and remains available in their account.

A learner was removed or deactivated, but my psychometric allocation wasn't returned

Psychometric allocations are deducted when the assessment is assigned, not when it is started or completed.

Once assigned, a psychometric assessment remains permanently linked to that learner, even if they:

  • leave the group,

  • are removed from the LMS, or

  • are deactivated.

The assessment is not returned to your monthly allocation. This ensures consistent historical records and prevents reporting inconsistencies.
