商標権は登録の日から10年間存続すると定められており、そのため何もしなれけば登録から10年後には商標権は消滅します。
しかし、商標権の存続期間が満了するまでに特許庁に申請すれば、その商標権を更に10年間存続（更新）させることができます。
ここで言う、商標権を更新するために特許庁に支払う費用のことを「更新料」と言います。
商標権は何度でも更新可能ですので、更新料を納付し続けさえすれば、その商標権は半永久的に残り続けることとなります。
また、登録料と同じく、更新料も一括納付だけではなく、2回に分割しての納付が可能となっております。

In Japan, trademark rights are stipulated to last for 10 years from the date of registration, therefore, if nothing is done, the trademark rights will be extinguished after 10 years from the date of registration.
On the other hand, if you apply to JPO before the term of the trademark rights expires, you can keep the trademark rights for another 10 years (Renewal of trademark rights duration).
The fee paid to JPO in order to apply for the above renewal is called “Renewal Fee”.
* “Renewal Fee” can be also paid by two installments like “Registration Fee”.
In addition, trademark rights can be renewed as many times as you like, so as long as you continue to pay the renewal fee, the trademark rights will remain semi-permanently.
